What did you do in the garden today?

@BReeder! - funny I just ordered Kabocha seeds from High Mowing. I think it was 5 something for 10 seeds. Not cheap, but I LOVE that company & trust their seeds implicitly.

I also ordered:
Yellowfin F1 Zucchini
Spaghetti Squash
Dragon Langerie Bush Bean
Rattlesnake Pole Bean
Pink Brandywine plants
Spanish Onion plants
Sungold cherry tomato plants
a Thyme plant (mine never survive winter, gonna bring this one inside next year)
& some chive plants

I'm hoping @Sally PB will send me some of those Egyptian Walking onions because I can't find them anywhere I usually buy from. :D

I'm probably done ordering for the garden & my mind has been made on the new beds, they will be squash. :fl Here's hoping I can keep the bugs at bay.
I have a few but looked on Amazon they have them

Remind me next summer! I got mine from Sow True Seeds. I like them the same way you like High Mowing.

Sow True won't ship them until fall; EWO are like garlic in that regard. Plant them in the fall and they'll grow the next spring.

When I get bulbils (the little topset onions), I'll let you know. I'm not sure how well they'll ship when they're green and growing. I got mine when they had dried and gone dormant. But I will have so many that I can ship them in the summer. And the fall. My bed is pretty well established now.

This reminds me, I planted along onions and forgot to note them in the garden plan. I didn't think I had a whole bed of garlic... half of it is walking onions I just forgot about. Oops!

@BReeder! I always have snow pea, snap pea and garden peas in my garden - surprising that you don't have any of them on your list. Great for fresh snacking while you watch the kids weed, lol.

I grew up snacking on pea pods in the garden during the summer. My first garden was 2 pumpkin plants, 4 rows of peas and 2 rows of green onions. I was 12 and begged my Dad to let me put in a garden to grow peas. He worked up the plot and bought green onion starts and a package of pea seeds- that man loved his green onions.
My issue with peas (and green beans) is that they must be picked in a very short window or they are not good eating. Snow peas are not as much of a problem from what I recall. I may toss some in the plan. There will be room inside the arched arbor of beans and cucumbers or as companions with the Jerusalem artichokes possibly (I'll need to check on that compatibility but JAs provide plenty of structure for peas to climb. I could also get a bush variety and plant it in the flower beds outside the garden.

Whee! I just ordered my onion sets. The local big box grocery has Stuttgarter every year, but only once did I find Red Baron there. I tried those, and of course since DH loves those best of all, they haven't had them since.

I got Red Baron sets from Gurney's last year, and I think I ranted on enough about my disappointment with Gurney's. So I looked online and got them from Maine Potato Lady. They aren't organic, but I can live with that.

I've never grown onions from seed. Has anyone here in Zone 5 done that?

I led stuttgarter last year. Some didn't swell very much, but many were a good size. I would like to find a larger onion that could grow in zone 5 to resemble a Vidalia or large Spanish onion. How large do red barons get?

I find Stuttgarter does well for me, so I've stuck with it. I got some BIG ones in 2020; not as big last summer.

Red baron are usually smaller than the Stutts. Last summer my total onion harvest was lower than 2020. Most are in the 2" size, with some 1" and some 3".DH like strong onions, so that's why I've stuck with these two.

Last year was also my first year growing multiplier or "potato" onions. All of those are in the 1-2" range. I saved the biggest ones to replant last fall. I'm hoping that they'll acclimate to their surroundings and decide to grow bigger...? The "multiplier" name suits, though. For each 1/2" set I planted, I got 2-3 onions in a bunch.

I'm trying to cover lots of bases with onions, as we use a lot. If it's in spaghetti sauce or stew or soup, it doesn't matter which kind I use, but for salsa and salads, DH wants to use the Red Baron.

I bought more walking Onion sets on Amazon. I have two large pots. I have put them in these are big enough. These take 2 small men and boy to move, Set them where is asked then filled them with dirt and chicken waste mixed.
The ones I started before the snow still looking happy, snow is gone.
