I forgot to mention how germination testing is going:

The test of my older seeds (47 different packets) was started the evening of January 6. On the 12th, I noticed a couple had already sprouted. I checked them all today and got definitive rates on 20. The other 27 need more time.

I can't remember the rule... at/below what percentage should I throw them out?

I was extremely surprised to find some of the onion seeds have sprouted. They say onion seeds are usually only good for 1 year. These are from 2014! If you're anything like me and don't want to do the math: that's 8 years!

We had a neighbor who recently moved out of state that had a camper. When Covid had them working from home they added satellite internet to the camper and would disappear for 2-4 weeks at a time during the summer and winter breaks while the kids were out of school. That's exactly what I would do if we had a camper or cabin.

See, I have the camper & work from home & would LOVE to do this - but DH has to work. I have gone to a campground & worked from there though.

Mine too! But it was 1 degree out this am, no planting here! I found a seller on Etsy & went for it. I'll plant them when we get a thaw, knowing they won't be ready till the following year but that's ok.

Morning all. So cold here, don't even want to go outside.

I sold my Jeep. I'm sad, but excited because that means the kitchen remodel will happen sooner. I have a pretty good idea of what I want to do & it shouldn't be a huge deal, the floor tile we have will stay - new cabinets, tile backsplash, counters & a DISHWASHER! The kitchen is tiny & has a window over the sink so I'm very limited in what I can do but I'm so excited for an update.

I noticed our orchid is getting another flower spike. It's been in bloom for a while now, but hopefully in a month or two we'll have more flowers yet.

I had to get rid of my indoor lettuce, I ended up with some sort of gnat infestation. I tried to get it under control but then just ended up throwing it outside, couldn't handle the bugs. Oh well, I'll buy lettuce till spring!

I locked up the big girls & let the littles in the big run for the day. Seems like it's about time for integration. They hang out together all the time anyway, just with a fence in between them.

Bit of a rant... I have been in the process of putting in a new fireplace. Contractor asked what I wanted for the mantel. I told him a live edge piece of walnut. Well... He brought the mantel on Wednesday (2 weeks late). It was pine, not walnut. Said he couldn't find any mills that had walnut. Then he installed it without sanding, staining, or sealing... So rather than losing more time, I had hoped DH and I could do all that with it up.... Now I'm just mad at myself. DH made a huge mess but did manage to generally sand it down but there are still a bunch of saw grooves in it. Then, none of the holes are epoxied.... Finally, to add insult to injury, I tried to apply a little stain to see what it might look like. I purchased the stain to match existing woodwork. Only it isn't even close.... It is so far off, it looks nearly black....

I give up. I think I'm going to have him take it down and do it right..... Contractor is going to be pissed but this looks terrible....

I find it hard to believe no walnut is available . What dimensions . I milled one 2 years ago . I think it was 6x6 or 6x8 and 66 inches long with one live edge . Try Craig's list . Sometimes guys with a portable mill list on there . Look for sawyers with a portable mill . Gosh even oak stained would be better . Walnut stain can be diluted to get a lighter color . Over a hundred years ago my Grandparents stained pine woodwork to walnut . Homemade stain from walnut hulls .This is a bookcase headboard . Oak stained cherry .
