What did you do in the garden today?

Well, my oyster bloom reached it's peak, I probably should have grabbed them yesterday or last night but still cool!
Here are some pics with the last one to show my hand too for perspective how BIG these baby's got!

I just got done sorting thru sweet potato's yesterday and some drippy stuff so the floor is a mess that needs a good swabbing! But it all goes back into the compost so, waste not want not.

The bag is still VERY active so am hoping to get 2 or maybe even 3 more blooms out of it the next few weeks. Let's see !

Anybody ever hear of planting potatoes in the Fall and letting them overwinter in the ground like garlic?

Here's an interesting article I just read that suggests the idea. This gardener is in zone 5b (same as me actually). Winter gets very cold and snowy that means for an extended period of months. I didn't think potatoes would survive the winter in the ground, but maybe...

The article also references planting onions in the Fall, something I was told not to do and thought it was odd since I am told to plant garlic and shallots in the Fall. I may try onions next Fall too then.

From what I have seen on garlic, they say to plant them after you think the worst of your frost is over.

I get all my garlic and taters and asparagus from filaree farms.

Very nice! I bought a shiitake mushroom log from Burpees. It never did anything. A $35 dud....

The only mushrooms that I can definitively identify are morels. Yet another reason why I can't wait for spring to arrive! Hunting morels is a big deal in our household. We even plan vacations around it....

I don't even know if I like it, but I'm seriously wanting to plant horseradish now.

It's a lovely plant, even if you don't eat it.
Start slow if you like trying it. Buy a good brand of cocktail sauce and have some shrimp or put some on a hamburger, which is my favorite.
It just adds a nice zing.
Then you can step up to JUST HR on beef roast.

Oh Morels are fun to hunt for.
Shitakes now, it can sometimes take a year or more for the log to actually boom, so don't give up hope yet, unless it's way past that age! Oysters are fairly easy to see and Lions Mane is another unmistakable one too. other than that, yah, Im very leery about wild found shrooms and while i'll look at them and perhaps drool, I don't know of any experts around my parts that are a text away so I'll look and leave be.

EVERY mushroom IS edible... Once.

On the Horse Radish, there can be a HUGE differences in flavor from eating it raw and cooking it. So yes it might be oh god HORRIBLE raw, when put on your food and cooked, it's an entirely different world and you find that you love it. If you like mustard, adding some of this to it, makes a really good mix, and the shrimp cocktail, absolutely yes, throw in some cajun spices, a bit of pepper and you'll knock that one out of the park!

Garlic is planted in Fall typically and overwinter in the soil to come up in early Spring. The alternative option is to plant in Spring, but all sources I have seen say the bulbs are smaller with Spring planting.

When my son was talking to a doctor in the emergency room about his appendix. He asked my son something about mushrooms.
We looked at each other. I said, "well we eat canned and sometimes fresh button mushrooms, and morel mushrooms when we can find them."
He just stared at us.
Later I was thinking that's a weird question...
Then it dawned on me, oh... lol, those "kind" of mushrooms.
LOL, my kids are homeschooled and have never even seen drugs, let alone know all of the names for drugs.

It's doubtful that the Dr was asking about mushrooms containing psychoactive substances, but rather the possibility of ingestion of Amanita phalloides, or "Death Cap" mushroom, because the symptoms of intoxication by that species mimic those of acute appendicitis.
