What did you do in the garden today?

Morning all. I’m wishing you all the best with getting a diagnosis @Sueby. Not knowing is sometimes worse. Snowing like crazy here. It started around 5 am and accumulating fast. I just finished off the first shoveling 1/2 hour ago and there was already 4 inches in the ground. I finished feeding and changing the chicken waterers and by then there’s close to an inch where I shoveled already. Fortunately it’s light and fluffy right now. Keeping chickens for eggs is always a good idea these days. I keep my rooster around and a nice incubator on hand in case things get real bad. And yes, I’m a bit of a prepper as well. I have always thought of it as long range planning. Lol! My upright freezer is usually pretty much full and I still have frozen produce and canned goods from last years garden. You just never know, stuff happens.

I have 2 large freezers, plus the one in the fridge. & I won't even mention the shelves up stairs full of all the other goodies. & the pantry under the stairs. & the canning cabinet. I'll just say the toilet paper shortage didn't scare me. :lau I am just a sale buyer of things that won't go bad & you can't beat the price of meat buying a half a cow. My only wish would be raising meat birds here. But I did stock up on turkeys after Thanksgiving at 49 cents a lb!

@Wee Farmer Sarah it seems like the end of this storm is coming quicker than they though - here's hoping you don't get buried!

I like the "long range planning" idea. These days if you say you're a prepper, you get some funny looks from some people. Though not from my friends, lol.

2-3" of new snow, and with the sunshine, it's BRIGHT out there.

In my mindset it’s like the way people lived 100 or more years ago. You “put up” food and dry goods when it was available and lived off your stored supplies and supplemented with eggs and milk either from your own or a neighbors farm. It makes sense to me. I don’t have any immediate plans to raise meat birds, however, all my chickens are dual purpose breeds. In the event I would need to raise them for meat, I have the means to do so.

I think the being prepared mindset is a good one.

Bloodwork, yes.
No lupis, nothing out of the ordinary. It's from breaking it right before the great shutdown, and being pushed aside as non-emergency after that. The bone and joint degraded due to neglect and use for two years. Now it's a chronic lifelong issue. Dammit. Sorry. pisses me off.

I want to get a hand pump well dug. If we loose power, we have no water.

-3 this morning. Even the stock water heaters had trouble keeping up. -12 with the wind.
It honestly didn't feel terrible as the sun is high and the air is dry.

Inside the frosty greenhouse is 25 degrees. I HOPE to work on the hoop house tomorrow and Sunday. We'll be back up in the 50s.

Mum seeds still haven't come up yet. I did toss some flax down to check for viability.

I agree.

Prepping... it may not be a global or even national emergency, but a personal one.
At first, I was thinking "I don't think, I really have to do this" but I did it anyway. I'm glad I am who I am, because although there are things at the store, (so far) we haven't been able to go and get supplies and groceries because we don't have money to spend.
So, prepping may not be a national emergency yet, but it could be a personal one. :)
