What did you do in the garden today?

DH is in the ER. Think it's pancreatitis.
That's too bad, I hope he recovers quickly.
Talked to my aunt in Georgia the other day and she said her Blue Lake beans aren't germinating well either. Anybody else having trouble with that variety?

ETA: Also any tips for germinating the beans?
It's really too cold here for beans yet, I think my wax beans rotted in the ground.

I'm crazy far behind so it'll be a while before I get caught up. So sorry if I've missed any messages.

DP has some white leghorn and olive egger eggs in the incubator, couple more weeks to go on them and then I'll have to set up the shared space of the coop again. Clover had a litter today, I'll distract her with some oats tomorrow morning and have a look at them to see what we have. I whacked my left index finger pretty good with a sickle then slammed the same finger in the back door, the emergency room glued it together again and it's healing up nicely. Lost my mind and bought a few tomato and pepper seedlings and they're still alive so far. Good trick too since it's still down to the low 40s and high 30s at night. The various greens are coming along nicely and the carrots are up! I've shifted a good deal of the finished compost into the beds with the help of the hens. Well, they mix it, I scoop it up again. Today we planted one of the pretty boxes on main street, there's a bunch more that folks in town will be planting up too.

And @TJAnonymous, I got your seeds, thanks so much for sending them, I'll start some soon.

Yep, did nothing but cost me money.
Duly noted on the greensand! I think the only thing that's going to make that soil better is lots of compost.

I've been putting compost and mulch in that garden since I started it, and it is a whole lot better now than when I started it.

@igorsMistress man do I love artichokes! Those are absolutely beautiful. ❤️

@NewBoots I almost tagged you last night wondering where you were! I thought you deserted us!

Not much happening today, a chilly 35 degrees but at least it's not raining. The birds are so happy to be free, man I hope that wasn't a mistake.

Who here sprouts seeds? I have a huge bag of scratch my neighbor left me when she moved & I don't really feed it to my birds, wondering if it would sprout. Any ideas? It looks like regular bird seed - mostly millet, some BOSS & some cracked corn (I know that would be useless).

It's "the sunny day" for this week. It was 28 degrees when I got up, and now it's up to 38. It'll warm quickly with the gorgeous sunshine out there.

The rest of the week is supposed to warm, 60s, with chances of rain most every day. As soon as it hits 42, I'll be out puttering around in the garden. What's the magic of 42? It's "the answer." If you get that, great. If not, doesn't matter. :)

Has anyone ever used greensand to lighten up heavy soil?
Try gypsum . Buy it at the garden store in bags .It breaks the chemical bond on clay soil allowing it to crumble . Bean germination try soaking beans before planting . Let them swell . Bean seed are usually good for a long time . I once got 50 pounds of wax bean seed free because it expired . I gave a lot of seed away and continued to plant it for another 6-7 years . Germination finally got too low .

Ag limestone does help, but honestly enriching the soil and the little wormies and bio critters and activity are the best.

I've removed and scrubbed the winter panels from the coop. I think the girls like the open view. All of their windows are open too. I'll go out and scoop out their smelly hen house after lunch. The panels are drying in the driveway, and I'll put those away after lunch. If I get ambitious, I'll install their new door. If I do that, I'll need to make a hail shutter for it ASAP as it has a large window on it. I'll have to think about that.

Watered the hoop house and opened the vents.

Having cuppa before I wander out to the seeding shed and look hopefully at empty flats of what should be tomato starts. Will toss more coir into the big soaking bin and dig out the soil loader.

Another putter through the day kind of day.
