What did you do in the garden today?

Have yall ever heard of this or tried it?
I don't have anything over the soil of my garden and wondering if I should?
I'm not gonna do straw again cuz I'm still picking out the pieces that seeded and grew lol...chicks luv it but me not so much. But it did hold the kale and spinach seeds in place through heavy rains and they r growin!
I use the baked straw so there are no weeds, well, almost none. It's expensive, especially now, but my back can't handle weeding so it's not even an option to not buy it here. It lasts 2 seasons though. But that sounds interesting!

I put out the slug beer baits & of course we got big storms that came through within a half hour & washed all the beer out. :barnie

Yes I use shavings and/or straw. I had read about the acidity thing but didn’t notice any major changes and our soil is very alkaline.
I’ll keep my fingers crossed the ablation works for you!

I love this!

Afraid to try…I stopped mulching due to slugs…I can control the weeds much easier than the slugs. I’ve tried wood chips, dried leaves, and straw. I see very few slugs with a chopped lawn and no mulch.
I used them one year. First I used the larger flakes as they don't tend to blow as much. They compacted and got slimy and rotted. They don't do that in the run. WHY? Because the chickens are CONSTANTLY turning them and allowing air in, so decomposition takes place, as it should.
The next round I tried the fine flakes. They blew EVERYWHERE, But because they were so fine, they rotted quickly. I plant and then use grass clippings around the plants, and regular mulch in the walking paths. Although that's been hit or miss for a few years. THe stuff I'm getting bagged, is moldy, wet, and half rotted already. Mulch no longer lasts a full summer. Ridiculous.

Watered everything.
Wisteria has buds. Another week or so and it will be in bloom.
The 3 younger, 12 foot tall 4 foot wide ones are in full leaf and climbing like crazy. I suspect they'll bloom next year. I hacked them all back pretty far last year, and it blooms on last years growth, which I took off.
Storms later today, so I work later.
Debating a trip to the city today.
Sinus' and ears are horrible today, so I haven't decided yet.

Yesterday I got one more bed planted. I turned it, removed the bindweed roots I found (makes it the third time this year to turn and remove bindweed roots). Then divided it into 8 sections (16’ x 4’ bed) for carrots. I read the packages, and turns out several recommended later seeding for fall harvest. Put this e aside. Ran in a got my 3 varieties of soybeans (for edamame) and bush green beans.

In the end, that bed now has gourds planted by the arching cattle panels. Then 4 sections of carrots, 3 sections of soybeans, and 1 section of green beans.

Today I’ll hopefully garden in the afternoon.

Crazy cat: he LOVES to use my boots and shoes as a scratching post sometimes. He always runs to the huge tree or to the cut logs with bark to work on his claws on those, so he’s appropriately doing that. But, if he needs attention (which is always, crazy cat) and you are not giving it to him, then he’ll go after your shoes….it’s sandal season, so now I have to be really aware of where he is. Yesterday I distracted him with some large chunks of wood mulch…which he chewed on -such a crazy cat!

Much neater than mine! :lau

Re: Pine shavings as mulch... I'd never thought about this. The wind would be a problem, and DH would not like stuff blowing around. If I could be sure they'd pack down, I'd try it. Maybe if they were put down on a calm day, and watered well?

We're supposed to get rain tomorrow, and storms on Friday. We'll see. They said storms last Saturday, and we got enough rain to make spots in the pollen on my car.

Tomorrow I am taking the rest of my sprouting potatoes to a friend to use as seed potatoes. He was specifically looking for the kind I have, Elba, and not able to find any. I'm done planting spuds, so if he doesn't plant them, they get tossed out as they are past edibility.

I cut the last of the greens in the green house to use in a frittata this morning. They were getting ready to bolt anyway. Now I can move those planters out of the way.
