What did you do in the garden today?

I looked on the spreadsheet from the usda. It showed a 20% increase but I don't know how they figure that at a dollar an egg. I saw the cheapest eggs nearby right now are $3.50 up from 99¢.
And 99 cents a dozen is common, or used to be, in the spring when either production is high or it's used as a loss leader for grocery stores at easter time. It's been a LONG stupid time since eggs were TRULY only 99 cents a dozen.

No solid plans today. I need to make a hail shutter for the hoophouse window, then maybe into town for competition practice.

DHs birthday today, taco night and pineapple chiffon cake for dessert.

Happy Hen is based out of Rogers, Arkansas. Beautiful country up there. So far HPAI hasn't hit Arkansas. That might be why they haven't raised their prices...
Well I had to buy their eggs because that’s all I could find. For a commercial egg they’re the closest I’ve found to backyard eggs.

I have this book:
The Seed Garden: The Art and Practice of Saving Seed

And have heard really good things about this book:
Seed to Seed, by Suzanne Ashworth

They are large books, so not cheap to buy. Look for one used at ABEbooks.com, maybe? To me, it's worth having a copy. They both cover seed saving in detail, one particular plant at a time.
Thank you again!

Thank you again!
There's this one too from Seed Saver Exchange, if you are interested. ETA - just saw that @Sally PB mentioned this book in her post. 😂 I've only read part of it so far but it seems like a good book. Hoping to save some seed from this year's garden using these techniques.

Happy Birthday to your DH!

Thanks. @igorsMistress
No pineapple juice in the pantry, so will figure out something else.
NO wind today at all at the moment. Tied up the tomatoes in the hoophouse, baby tomatoes are appearing in there. Stable flies in there, just a couple were relentless. Ode de'Off is this morning's scent. Icky, but necessary. These flies are crazy. They can be biting you and you can be directly slapping their heads, and they just say, '\"yes, please, may I have some more!"
Once they find blood, they bring friends.

Eggs here were about $3 - $3.25 for 18 this time last year. Same carton now costs $4.

On the bright side, two of my Olive Eggers have pink wattles and combs now, so I'm hoping they'll start laying sooner rather than later.

One of the rooster boys is firmly on my "Eat This One" list. He's the biggest, with the brightest red comb and wattles and the cockiest strut in the run, of the five boys. Yesterday when I went in to feed them he pecked the top of my foot and drew blood the 🤬 I hollered loud enough to startle the rest, then yelled "I'm gonna eat you!" at him before leaving to check the damage.

I'm going to get out and water later. 106 today.
