What did you do in the garden today?

Beautiful sight! A DEAD SVB along with some DEAD cucumber beetles. I have 3 yellow bowls in my rhubarb bed as that is the closest part of the garden to neighbor with the rampant and random pumpkin vines (about 30-40 feet away).

Asparagus planted this spring. “Millennium” variety. Does this look good? It seems to be growing well. But what do I know? Not sure if this is a good or poor number of spears from one crown that I planted. Several crowns have similar spears, sone have fewer.

That's beautiful! Is it just ornamental or to eat?
Enter it in the new harvest/garden contest! ;)

Thanks! It's edible but it's considered a flint corn so typically used for cornmeal or flour. I was told it also works as a popcorn which is what I'm going to experiment with! I almost don't want to eat it because it's so pretty though, lol!

Oh I didn't know there was a contest!

What do you do with the glass gem corn? Do you eat it? What does it taste like?

It's not a fresh eating corn. It's actually mostly dried already. I allowed the plants to completely turn brown before harvesting and now I'll dry them for an additional 4 weeks before using them. They make pretty cornmeal and I'm going to experiment using it as popcorn this year as I was told it makes decent popcorn.

Just looked them up. Wow, is all I can say. I might order hatching eggs from them next spring. No way I can order anywhere near 16 chicks, their min for guaranteeing live delivery. Well, if my neighbor wants to split and order...
I am REALLY hoping to finally be able to get chickens next spring (maybe even this fall, if we can find the budget for it). I'd be willing to split an order with you (I believe we are only about 1 hour apart).
I have a bit of laundry on the line, trying my best to convince it to rain here!

:fl :fl :fl

If we don't get a decent amount, then I'll water tomorrow. Really need a good soaking.
Right?! I hooked the hose up to the sprinkler so that if it didn't rain, I could just turn it on from the house. It downpoured for maybe 5 minutes, but not enough to make me think I don't need to water. It's better than the no rain, though.

I spent 2 hours in the garden this morning. The first hour was spent pruning and tying up 4 more tomato plants (7/36 are done). The second hour was spent trimming down the lambs quarters in the corn bed and anywhere else they were growing like weeds, and pest hunting. I found SB eggs, two SB making more SB, and 3 JB (I killed 2, the other fell where I couldn't reach it). Then, I spent an hour burning all those trimmings.

How long will they be good in the refrigerator? Can I freeze them?
Garlic should last a good while in the fridge, I'd think. What I do is clean off the cloves, rinse off dirt if I have to. Then dry on paper towel for a few hours. I store mine in a zip bag in the produce drawer. I use a lot of garlic, so I've never had any go bad before I could use it.

I'd think you could mince it and freeze it too.
@Sally PB This dried out. 😳 It was in the back and I didn't see how far it was.
I'm sure it's fine. Leave it to cure with the rest of them. It's just farther along.

Got about 15 minutes of sprinkle this morning just after daybreak. Not enough to register in the rain gauge, which is normal this year. Was already doin some watering. Left the soakers goin and figured the sprinkle would help out a LITTLE,
Other than waterin, nothin else goin on in the garden.
Brewed up a batch of salsa yesterday evening but was too pooped to jar it up. Was done this morning. 1 Qt., 3 pints and 1 - 1/2 pint. Kinda spicy which I like. The wife said "It's OK".
Oh yeah, the peanuts that I planted 2 weeks ago have started pokin their heads above the ground! Good legume cover crop for an unused portion of the garden and I get a little in return!

I was out in the garden, digging up weeds and finding grubs. I heard thunder, so I went inside, after getting the laundry off the line.

I should have left the laundry, as it only rained a little. But I'll take it. Probably just wetted the dust on the surface down.

I can mark "hill the potatoes" off my list, so that's something.
