What did you do in the garden today?

I take it ALL back!
More covid symptoms but still testing negative on home test.
Get outside late to check on everything only to find it looks like BIG Foot himself has trampled all through the raised bed and dug up everything!
I had just got it all fertilized and covered with pine shavings and it looked beautiful! God gave it a good rain!
And now this!
I am so frustrated 😠 n 😤 at whatever this thing is!
I didn't have my phone with me or I would have taken pics.
Sounds like a big bunny or a deer.
.both are tasty 😁

Hmmm now I'm super curious...I have one that is blooming like it's a job and is a massive plant

I would probably harvest next month then! 😉 Even when there are blooms I wait until August so they put on some more size but flowers are a good sign that there are potatoes because sweet potatoes won't flower until they feel they have sufficient energy stores under the ground, aka sweet potatoes! 😁

esturtz27, Just because you chased the Dillo off don't mean he's gone for good. Survival is a powerful instinct. Dillos are a pretty primitive animal and he/she knows where his food is @. It will be back! As cruel as it sounds, it needs to leave, permanently, if you get my meaning. Then another will invade the vacated territory. It's kind'a a win/lose situation. Somethins gotta give. Either you or the dillo. You decide!

PS, I've been in this for a long time, I know how it works.

I grow sweet potatoes like weeds here every year. I legitimately have them popping up where I don't want them because the ground doesn't freeze and they never die, lol. With that said I eat them right out of the ground. You could let them sit for a day but it's really not necessary in my experience.
My neighbor from LA (Louisiana) said that he’d eat them out of the ground too (raw). But every place I’ve looked up info instructs to cure them -this is partly to increase their ability to store well as they will heal minor scratches and toughen the skin enough to be handled without few issues.

They will certainly not grow year after year here, on their own…it can get down to the negatives teens in the winter!!

I’m excited to experience growing sweet potatoes bc it will be a new experience. But, with about 80 slips growing…I’m going to have to figure out sone room for curing and storage.

Lol it'll always be the dillo they carry leprosy and other diseases so I have no problem camping out for him/ her. I've been gardening a while but never in the south so it's good to know I can't scare them off.

If you can find a wicker linen basket that's how my mom and grandad have always kept them

I did the same thing. I planted 50 bush and 20 vine slips 🤣
I planted at interval every 2 weeks for 2 months thinking it would spread out my harvest. Now I doubt it because the biggest vine (it dwarfs my toddler if he stands in it 🤦🏻‍♀️😅) is the last one I planted.

Ps today I'm failing with technology
