What did you do in the garden today?

I water in the morning to avoid the moisture attracting slugs in the evening. But I have friends who swear by watering in the evening.
Yeah i remember having TONS of snails and I guess slugs last year out front in flowers ...haven't seen as many this year so I wonder if it's cuz we've been watering in morning not night.
Had forgotten bout that.

Well I've only ordered from one place since getting back into gardening this year and was little disappointed as to germination and growth of what did germinate. Not to mention the packets did not have very much information on then as to growing info like what you normally see when getting seed packets at local stores.
That was at True Leaf Market. And since didn't see any of yall use them I'll not go back there!
Based on research it looks like I'm in an area that can grow all kinds of garlic!
So few questions...

How does Elephant Garlic differ from any other garlic if uts not technically a garlic?

They are the ones that say sold out....is that currently or is that for pre-orders for fall that are already sold out. I know they have a large business so wasn't sure.

That is AWESOME! Do you split up the bulb and plant in the individual cloves then?

Have I told yall lately how much I appreciate ALLLL YAAAALLLLLLLLL!!!

This is a copy/paste. lol

"Despite the name, elephant garlic is not actually garlic. Though both aromatics are part of the allium genus, they belong to different species. Elephant garlic belongs to ampeloprasum, the same species as leeks; garlic is from the species sativum."

It's garlic to me though. Looks like garlic, and tastes like garlic. :D

Morning - good seed discussion timing as I've just started my list for next year! I love hearing everyones thoughts on it.

I always order from High Mowing in VT. They may be a little more expensive but I appreciate what they stand for (they had a show on PBS a couple years ago about them). Buuut, I got my Kabocha seeds from them this year & out of like 7 I planted only ONE came up. I never have any issues with them so I'll blame me. LOL

I usually get tomato starts & onion starts from Gurneys & this year they really annoyed me sending the onions too early & the tomatoes too late but in the end everything is doing really well. My onions look fantastic & the brandywine tomatoes, while they may be a bit small, are producing really well.

& other than that I pick up last minute seeds at my local garden store or the Depot. I always pick up loose leaf lettuce there too.

As far as garlic goes I have been planting the same garlic for years. I can't even remember what it was it's been so long. The softneck I got from High Mowing & it was rated really well for my zone. I get great big bulbs every year. The hardneck I bough locally years ago too & it's fantastic also, but I only plant a little hardneck, I like the softneck better because I like to braid it & I'm not a fan of having to pay attention to the scapes. :lau

Speaking of garlic, I pulled the hardneck today & it's drying a bit in the sun before I hang it. It looks great. I think I have 6 cloves. Watered the tomatoes & everything on the deck (lettuce, maters, jalapeno & dahlias).

Question on watering...I usually water in the mornings but it seems like i get a later start each day!
Do yall just have preference as to if ya water at night or morning...or is there a reason u do one or the other for the benefit of the garden?
I also threw out a few seeds in the raised bed yesterday for another round of tomatoes and basil.
Should I water those seeds each day til they germinate?
We are in high 90s-100s and seldom getting rain.

I think this is dependent on where you live. I like watering in the evening because it stays with the plants longer here, lol. When I water in the morning it evaporates as soon as the sun comes up, so my plants seemed much happier when I switched to evening watering. It can increase certain disease and pest issues depending on where you are though.

I have been watering in the evening. I am lucky and don't have slug issues...and it's so hot and humid out that watering in the day would just evaporate into the sky as soon as I started the sprayer. Also I have a little dude that wants breakfast, 2 dogs that want to either eat chickens or dog food lol and then the girls get super loud if they aren't out by 630. I wasn't a morning person until the army. Now even retired it seems I'm blasted awake by 5 🤣

His full name is Clifford thief of biscuits....he 120 pounds of old red dog lol
I love that! (aaand would love a pic of Clifford Thief of Biscuits!)

I got a couple new chippy traps - three dead in 2 days! These traps were well worth the money as they had figured out all our other traps. We'll see how long it takes them to figure out these, but in the mean time it seems our house/siding destroying chippys are dead as the dog hasn't spotted them today & they do love to torment him.

Question: How do you preserve seeds?
I had a Pumpkin and an Acorn Squash that I wanted to preserve the seeds, but they got all moldy and I had to throw them away.
Advice please. Sometimes I get a spectacular specimen and I want to get more like it. :D

Ooooh I can definitely help with this one! I save seeds all the time! The very easiest method I've found is to rinse them thoroughly and immediately after harvesting, dry them for a few days to a week on a paper plate or wax paper, and then store them in PAPER envelopes. I use those little coin envelopes from Amazon. Believe me, I love those little plastic baggies for convenience too but if you don't go through the process of fermenting the seeds to eat up those sugars that mold adores, and drying them perfectly with silica, etc. then the paper envelopes are best because they breathe and allow the seeds to continue to dry if necessary! Next season you can usually pour them into plastic bags if you have leftovers. They will certainly be completely dry by then.
