What did you do in the garden today?

Only bright red things I've seen in my garden are lady bugs and this guy:

I had leaned down really close because I thought I'd seen something red and was idly thinking it was a lady bug. Dang I jumped back fast. Didn't want him on my face. Jumping spiders are cute, but at three feet away.

Gave a little water to anything that looked wilty.

He's kinda cute though. lol

Now for something cool. My sister is cleaning out mom and dad's house and making it her own, and she came across all of my great-aunt's mortuary and embalming notes and books. She and her husband were morticians and they raised dad. Anyway, among all that was a tiny, handwritten notebook from 1911 of pharmacists recipes for the apothecary. The guy, who was a pharmacist, would have lived a block away from auntie. It's so cool. It has recipes for medicines for syphilis, stomach complaints, asthma, bed bugs, crabs, rash, toothache, dry hands, horse ointment, pineapple soda fountain syrup, colds etc. In no order! So recipe for crabs is right next to foot powder, next to soda syrup. LOL
The one for bed bugs sounds like it would not only kill bed bugs but pretty much every thing in the house, including people. It used a gallon of BENZINE!

Have yall ever tried to transplant a flowering cucumber plant that's got bout 3 vines off it already during this time of year?
We did cuz it was supposed to be dead (lol) but then took off and it ended up being a good thing the others all died off cuz they were in awful placement in raised bed.
Anyway we tried to save it by moving it, got all the roots and fertilized it well and watered really well and it did not recover.
Just wanted to see if that's cuz it is so hot and humid, or cuz I did something wrong in transplanting it.

I have mixed results transplanting cucumbers but I normally do it when they're really young. I moved two this year, one took and the other didn't. I think they must not like having their roots disturbed maybe?

Come, let me give you hugs...you clearly weren't hugged enough as a child and need love so your taste buds function properly again. View attachment 3188234
Actually, it is genetic. I have a severe protein allergy, and part of that is that things don't taste to me like they do other people. As a kid I was labeled a picky eater, but it was that things were either revolting or really revolting.

DS spent all last week in Boston at a tech conference for work. People were dropping lies flies with covid and are stuck there. I picked him up last night at 10pm, and he work up this morning with a 101 fever.
Guess I'll go grab some covid tests for the house.
Dammit.

Oh no! I'm so sorry! I hope he feels better. :(

Nope they do NOT like their roots desturbed.

That's SO COOL! I love that stuff... My great grandmother used to write for the local paper back in the early 1900s. They also ran a fruit farm so had opportunity to interact with lots of locals. Her columns were more like gossip columns... "so-and-son's barn burnt down..." or 'so-and-so has taken ill so Mrs other-person brought her a pie..." However it was super interesting to see her opinions on things like women cutting their hair short, showing their ankles, or other "controversial" matters of the day. Anyway, I'm glad my grandmother saved that stuff for future generations to enjoy.

Oh, and my DH has been a licensed embalmer for 25 years now... 😂 He works for the state Health Dept in his day job but does trade embalming on the side to maintain his license. Nice supplemental income.
