What did you do in the garden today?

We got rain last night!

I don't know how much yet until I go check the rain gauge but at least it is SOMETHING!

No gardening today...I skipped bread making yesterday I was just burnt our from stuff going on. Took a nap with my little dude and then played with him in his blow up pool. Today rain...I hope tons and tons of it. I hope we have rain like the rainy season scene in forest Gump. I did water yesterday but I'm still feeling ick today. I'm gonna bake something nice, play with the dude, probably get in some yoga and make pizza tonight. Have a great one folks

This just hit me! I don't think or remember, seeing any honeybees in the garden so far this year. Maybe I've missed/overlooked but.... I have had an abundance of carpenter bees . Not in a forested area and the folk down the road who raised HB's sold out a few yrs ago. CBs seem to be doing a good job but I miss the HBs.

Checked the rain gauge in the garden. It didn't even have enough water in it to cover the bottom. 😒

The ground looked decently wet although it was soaking up or evaporating quickly as the sun came over the trees.

I'm guessing MAYBE a tenth of an inch?

Oh yeah, I keep forgetting to mention that some of my Concord grapes are starting to show signs of chlorosis. Not sure what is up with that... They have been going gangbusters all year. Not sure if it is from the heat or maybe I just need to feed them more? Clearly something is causing things to bind up.

ETA - found this while researching my chlorosis issue. Very interesting and could explain chlorosis in other fruit trees/vines too.... https://fruitgrowersnews.com/news/c...-problem-that-affects-many-concord-vineyards/

Good morning gardeners. Insanely humid. Calling for rain today but so far only a few sprinkles. The garden looked pretty good when I did my walk through earlier. I pulled another onion, only 4 more to go. I found 5 cucumber seeds in my storage containers and planted them in a large planter near the big garden. The really large containers near the chicken yard are struggling. I just don’t think they get enough sun over there. DD planted three or four hills of cucumbers in her garden last week and they are coming up now. A deer had landed in her garden the last time she went to work on it. She was really worried that she lost everything. That was in the middle of packing for her big move. So she tidied it up as best as she could. She went there this morning and was happy to see the majority of her plants, including the chocolate tomatoes were doing just fine. She picked a small bunch of cherry tomatoes and a jalapeño. I had been noticing the evil cabbage moths flying around my backyard for about a week. Fortunately the little Goldfinch that happens by occasionally snatched them up. Apparently they love those evil moths. I’m loving my impatiens again this year. They’ve just started blooming. I pruned them back a lot this year and they are looking pretty good now. I’m also getting a few more dahlia blooms in the little pots with the zinnias.

TUrned the irrigation on in the garden and then decided I'd just hose it to make sure it all got enough water.
On the walk I found 5 more hornworms, HUGE ones. Tossed them over the fence and trimmed all the chewed branches so I can more easily see new damage in days to come. UGH the monsters. They weren't little either. I swear they go from 0 to the size of a boa constrictor over night.
I think the onions are done. They're flopped over. They weren't worth the garden space this year.
I saw blooms on one of the sweet potatoes today, but none of the others.

DH and DS are down in their respective offices for the day, and I'm about to get dressed and go work on the loom.

My onions did ok but they are all pretty small. This is my first experience with growing them and I wasn’t aware they like lots of nitrogen. I’ll know to stock up on worm castings next year. But although they are small, they are flavorful.

Lost the thread! Will have to go back and reread about 10 pages. Well, we got the littles moved to the farm this weekend minus the 10 girls we are keeping here at the house. Ours are in the run during the day but garage at night because one soffit still needs to be HW clothed to keep predators out. Bad news, can’t work on it today because it’s raining. Good news? It’s raining, finally! Not super hard, but a light, steady rain. I hope the vegetables soak it in. I have 2 zucchini’s developing a small cuke growing with tons of flowers around it, and I picked all tomatoes with a hint of red to ripen on the counter last night in anticipation of the rain…one red cherry, the rest are coming! Baby beans are on the vines, garlic pulled and kale almost big enough to TP in its place. Zinnias and nasturtium are a few inches high. We’ve been eating kale, lettuce and Swiss chard every night with dinner. My grocery bill was $20 less today. Once the rest of the produce is producing I anticipate it dropping even more! image.jpg

I had to get a couple things sorted this morning. Watered half the garden and fed the chickens. Then I had to get the reserve bag of chicken feed out of the freezer outside. Layer pellets, right on time! Got that bag sorted into two 5 gallon buckets that DH bought for me at the store the day the tub lid broke. I wish I could say I pulled the whole bag out of the chest freezer but... hehe, it weighed half my body weight, so no. I had filled up one bucket by scooping it out, and started on the other before I could pull the bag out and dump the rest.

DH put up a 6x20 shade cloth over the weekend. One over the current "big" garden, and one where an additional garden will be planted this coming spring. Honestly that new spot will probably be my new herb garden, and the "big" garden will be strawberries and asparagus if all goes well. I think I have my first asparagus frond up now. It's about five or six inches tall and very, frondy, lol. We are over 100 for today and the next three. My okra don't have any more blooms, and I've got one pod on one plant. If they don't put out any more, I'll let that one mature for seed.

I'm going to try an experiment. If it works, I'll share in a few days/week.

So crazy, i was thinking that same thing this morning when I saw my first bumble bee this year. Just be too hot for them this summer. I had tons at the chicken water tank over the spring but not much lately. 🐝
