What did you do in the garden today?

Helped my grandgirl in her garden, pulling weeds and such. She's grown a great little crop of moon and stars watermelons and a few flowers, along with tomatoes, beans, peppers, rhubarb, onions, squash, chives, basil, lavender, and flowers. Wall to wall of weeds and watermelon!!!! My "after" pics didn't take for some reason, but you can really see the plants in there after all the grasses were removed...that Bermuda grass just LOVES the BTE gardening method. This is their first year using the wood chips. Some of the Moon and Stars watermelons they have grown...the largest was around 15 lbs and these are around 10. There are 13 more still growing in that garden and we hope they make it all the way to maturity....these are the best tasting watermelon I've ever eaten!!! Lot's of seeds, but great melon!
. That girl is so cute! And it is good to see little ones interested in gardening. My experience as a youngster stayed with me my whole life.

I got 14 jars of bean salad ready for the cellar as soon as they cool... and we need to get the apples picked off the trees. the deer have decided it is their buffet line. i don't think so. between the deer picking them off the tree and the chickens pecking all the windfalls... i'm not going to get much pie apples canned!~
Care to share your bean salad recipe??? Do you just can the apples or can apple pie filling? If the latter, how bout sharing that recipe also!

Raked up some leaves and put them on my new beds. They were beckoning me from under a big maple. Got my seed garlic this week, and I have Columbus Day marked as planting day. I forgot where I read that. I'm in zone 6b/7, so hopefully that's about right. The last garlic I planted at my old house didn't do well at all.

Is it a garlic bred for your warmer climate?  From my reading, the stiff neck garlics do better up north, while the soft neck garlics do better down south.

It's called "Moroccan Creole, which is a hard neck, if I recall. I ordered it from Bakers Heirloom seeds in Mo. My previous attempt was with a Russian version I bought at the farmers market. I'm now in western MD, which is more mountainous and cold, so hopefully it does ok.

You know, I've read the same thing but that's not really been my experience. My dad and I bought organic garlic from one of our grocery store and planted that I have some that's been growing just fine and making nice bulbs for over 3 year but it's hardneck, it produces scapes, from what I've read soft neck doesn't do that, we bought more last year and that grew like crazy and made some pretty decent bulbs but it also sent up scapes. I also got some garlic from a guy who buys our eggs at the farmers market, he's been growing it for over 30 years in this area so I'm excited to try that this year. A far as I know I don't have soft neck garlic.

I got some elephant garlic at bakers last year and it did amazingly well. Good luck!
