What did you do in the garden today?

Cut off the skin. That’s where the zing is, the white part has all the nutrients.
Very interesting because a lot of the other stuff, they say the skin is where the vitamins are. I am going to have to go pick some radishes at the farm and give this a try. Maybe for lunch, them and a bunch of other greens and skillet it up, what i dont like the chickens there never seem to complain :D

Going on Day 2 of "It's supposed to rain but didn't." I went ahead and watered my seedlings in the garden with a watering can. I have the hose to the garden dismantled at the moment.

Since the Temps haven't dropped and the rain hasn't been consistent, I don't want to put out my Hinnonmaki Red Gooseberry starts. I'm currently keeping them in the sunroom where they get bright indirect light and it's cooler. I also want to transplant my apple & plum tree starts. They are on Year 2 now. Still really small but I'm worried about them getting rootbound and the tap roots not getting to expand.

So far everything else looks good. My raspberries and blackberries are rebounding from the Septoria. Strawberries are not. I'm just going to have to rip them all out and start over. I will use the barrels and see if that works better.

I transplanted 2 blueberries into bigger pots. They seem to be adjusting well now that they have a little more room to spread out.

Stuff is going okay in the garden...but my favorite Henny Penny chicken got attacked by a young hawk today. She really tried to escape. Roos did nothing but hide... Sadly she was suffering horribly so I finished what the hawk didn't. We thought we could free range our girls but this is the second hawk attack so this weekend we build an enclosure

So sorry to hear about your girl. That is always heart breaking. Sounds like it's time to get rid of the roo's too. get some real roo's who'll protect their harem, not just a bunch of useless eaters.

If the hawks attacked twice already, that's a bad sign, it means they know there's food there and they will be back. Unfortunately getting permission to take out a hawk is a lengthy and pain in the ass process. especially a young one, it thinks it hit a jackpot and will terrorize your girls until it is given a reason to want to stay away from the area.

I have heard of people using snare traps for catch and release elsewhere but again, check the laws in your area before you do that. There are ways to scare them too.

It was a different hawk this time...first time was a broad wing this time was a juvenile red tail. There was a smarmy owl at daybreak one day thinking about it but we keep the girls in till 730 now so he's always cleared off. My biggest roo is still only 13 weeks old (Dot) he's a Bielefelder big strong looking dude who gets bullied by Rodney and Rosie (old Englishx cream leghorn) I think Rodney is the issue. Rosie is a great look out and always warns everyone of everything even geese. Idk maybe all the roos should go but I really wanted to breed dot with my Bielefelder girls they are beautiful chickens.

Thank you for the advice though I do appreciate it. This is my first flock and I'm learning alot. Alabama is suuuuuper protective of hawks and I would have to get someone our here to setup the snares/traps. Truthfully I see a different hawk everyday we live in a goose fly zone and they love taking out a gosling here or there.
