Good morning post covid I think first day in long time.
I feel alive again. Going to see if blackberry or tomatos turned ripe in the three cooler days we just had.

It isnt just alabama, they are federally protected as well, which I don't understand anymore. They are NOT endangered. They protect seagulls the same way under 'migratory species'. Anyone who has ever had to deal with them will tell you, seagulls are just Diseased Rats with Wings, but god help you if you do anything to them.

You CAN get permits to cull hawks, it just takes time and paperwork. Each location is different too, but if you do some internet research, you can find plenty of ways to... 'mitigate' hawk issues. Bottle Rockets may work. I have heard hanging up CD's on string because them reflecting in the sun scares off birds as a method but never checked the validity of that one. Are there any falconry groups around? one of them may be able to offer advice or maybe even grab the thing for you? You'd have to determine what is 'feasable' with where you live and what is not.

Btw, I'm rather annoyed that I can't get any of the strawberry plants I want online because they are all considered out of season... Looking for Allstar, Quinault, and Ozark Beauty. I really wanted to plant bareroot in the fall but I guess I'll have to wait until spring and get a skimpy harvest.

I've had that problem here...if I mail order in spring, they won't send them until our temps are going too high already...no matter how early I order. I end up sticking to what I can get at the store or starting them inside until fall.

I keep hearing that strawberries are perennial, ever growing, will just keep growing and going, however I have for the life of me, never been able to really keep them more than maybe 3 years tops. yes they grow, but they look really crappy after say the 3rd season, and really don't do well anymore with the berries. They are small, ugly. Maybe I should snip runners and just re plant every year instead of just keeping the main mother plant going and going and going?

I've had mine going on 7 years. I snip back the runners and will cut the mother plant back in the fall. Covering them with straw for winter. They really do look absolutely crap by the end of summer! I have pink ladies and everlasts(maybe everlong hmm). I get good medium sized berries. Cutting them back and covering them has helped a good bit. Right after first frost they get mushroom compost mix and more straw ontop.

I'm tearing out half my strawberries this fall, I have too many & will get better use out of the space. I have enough strawberry jam to last me a couple years from this years harvest!

I'm annoyed, it's still August & I already had to buy eggs. I should get some chicks. I really do miss the production reds.

I will try that. We have an oddly large stash of bottlerockets from last 4th

We do too.... Boys will be boys. Once I figured out it was useful to keep the hawks away, I started stocking up at 4th of July and New Years Eve.

They don't keep the hawks away indefinitely but it helps when they are hunting for food they decide to go look elsewhere.

CD's didn't work around my quail pen. What did work was turning on the electric fence - the moment I flipped the switch a hawk flew out of the tree I fenced in, guess it was watching me the whole time, and hasn't been back based on the roof not being dented in anymore. The fence was for raccoons, it's a nice plus the hawks avoid it too, but it's a small area maybe 10x10. I imagine a bigger fenced area won't deter hawks from landing inside.
