What did you do in the garden today?

Thanks! Is is beneficial or a pest? And will it sting?

What bug is this? Found on my carrots. But I’ve seen it a couple of times recently.

Bright red/orange, including the legs, but blue wings.

It's a friendly bug for you. It's a good guy.

LOTS of tomatoes out there, temps during the day are still in the 90s - too hot to ripen tomatoes, and at night getting into the high 50s, too cool to ripen. So there is a brief window of ripening going on right now, slower. UGH. Drives me bonkers.

BTW, this is a friend of mine on youtube. He makes great DIY videos and gardening, food processing. Small homestead in England.
Subscribe if you are of a mind to. I really enjoy this things.
This week he's making a simple can storage system for the pantry.

Couldn’t help myself (again! Lol).

Based on my garden chart to tell me what is planted where, I determined I have 87 sweet potato plants planted.

12 varieties.

Four of these are mid-season ones, so they need to stay put a little longer (one orange, two white, one purple variety).

Eight are early season. ( six orange, one purple, one white with purple skin).

I investigated and found more promising signs of sweet potatoes!! The mid season, look less promising at the moment, as expected. Also, a few plants look small- as if shaded by more vigorous ones nearby. And I have 7 planted that are not under any warming plastic, so not sure what kind of production we will find on those.

However, if each plant gives me 5 sweet potatoes (which seems about avg), then I’m going to have 400+ sweet potatoes!! Guess I should start getting some curing shelves ready!

Hugelkultur trench. I dug three of them. I found half a dozen potatoes I missed when I dug the taters that were there.

I put some rotten old apple logs in the bottom of the trench. Then some odd sticks, lots of grass clippings, and pulled squash vines.

Filled two of the trenches back in and rake it smooth. Funny, dirt is just as heavy going into a trench as it is coming out. If not heavier, as we had a soaker of a rain.

The posts mark the trenches. In between I'll dig some holes and bury kitchen scraps and compost.
