What did you do in the garden today?

Dan, hope your roo recovers well from his pox, and the rest of them don't get sick.  I've not had to deal with any disease with my flock, but... sooner or later, I expect my day will come.  Nice luffa.

Today, hubby and I dumped 3 trash cans of compost and 3 trash cans of seasoned wood chips in the garden.  I moved all of the corn stocks to the HK mound, gave the flock a broken bale of hay, covered the remaining foot print of the HK with heavy cardboard.

Dan I also hope your rooster recovers. Some of my birds got dry pox.

He's doing pretty well it seems, I checked his mouth last night and 90% of the plaque build up was gone :celebrate Its not fun.

A work day for me so unfortunately not too much gardening, i catch my shower water so watered my small fruit trees this morning before work. This arvo i enjoyed a beer with the girls - getting to be a regular thing hehe.

The first tree is a finger lime - very unusual and delicious, google it! The second is a lemon myrtle. cant WAIT until they're big enough to give the girls some shade and the finger lime to fruit.

They are both Aussie natives :)

My next door neighbour has a cafe so she gave me a big container of scraps for the compost so chucked them in :)

I have been harvesting/using my Daikon radishes . Still a little bite to them . So I cook them with steak or other meat . The hot is gone then and still some crunch . Colder weather coming and that should tame the bite in them .

Today I planted the little peach tree that I ordered from Starks. I put it near two apple trees already on the property, so do 3 fruit trees make an "orchard?"

I have 4 fruit trees, two pear & two figs. I call mine an orchard.

Why is it that only gardeners understand the delight of a statement like that???? I get excited when hubby and I are out driving around and I see a big pile of compost, mulch, or even manure! Oh the possibilities! Same thing with a packet of seeds. A non gardener doesn't appreciate the power in a small handful of seeds. Miraculous how a pinch of seeds can turn into hundreds of pounds of produce.
This is so true! I loved walking through my little garden this year looking at all the plants that were growing that I had planted.

@lazy gardener
I have a rooster who acts similar to your pullet. He is always following me down to the garden and hangs out about 20 feet from me usaully. Right now he has wet pox

so I'm taking his jumping over a 4 foot fence to follow me to the garden as a good sign.
What a pretty rooster! I hope he recovers. I've never had wet pox, but dry pox usually shows up here in the fall.

Dan I also hope your rooster recovers. Some of my birds got dry pox.
My Cream Legbars got dry pox last year around this time. They were hatched in Sept, so where only a couple months old when they got it. It was rough on them due to their age so I plan on not having young chickens during the fall.

Spread 11 bags of mulched leaves on the garden and around two apple saplings. Got those off the curb in town....love this time of year!
Way to go Bee! How many do you plan on getting this year? I will be using leaves for my gardens again this year. I wasn't able to get any more chips. I really don't know if I like the chips or not. I'm not thrilled with them out in my orchard. The chips are attracting mice/rats. You can smell them.

I've gotten my garden mostly cleaned out. I still have a couple of marigolds growing strong. I left those since they looked so pretty. I cut my okra off and left the stumps to rot, but due to our mild fall, they are starting to send up side shoots. I pulled the rest of the volunteer watermelons. Most didn't ripen before they split open, so the chickens got a treat.

I have my new garden area composted & mulched. I'm doing a BTE garden, but I am putting up what looks like raised beds to garden in. They are 4x8' and 6" tall. I'm not adding soil to them, but using them to put my compost only in the areas I will be planting. That way I won't be composting the whole garden including the walkways. Does that make sense?

I bought some flowering plants at Lowes the other day on clearance. I have blue butterfly bushes, some gerberas, purple jew and what looks like a black eyed susan, but it's called something else. I'll be planting them in the garden (except for the jew) to help attract pollinators.

I raked up several piles of leaves today to put in the coops. I put the big oak leaves in the coops for the chickens to shred up. I have smaller elm & pin oak leaves that I will put in the garden for mulching along with more pine straw.

I love buying plants on clearance. They usually look like they're on their last leg, but a little TLC usually brings them back.
I am a confirmed bottom feeder. Will not buy a plant at a box store at it's full price unless it's something that I've wanted for a very long time. But usually, I'll just patiently wait. Wanted a butterfly bush, and 3 years later, bought one on clearance. I joke that "Clarence and Sally" are my shopping buddies. ("clearance and sale")
