What did you do in the garden today?

They are like 30 dollars to buy one, and last a long long time. I have one that is probably 25 years old and going strong.

on the bears, yes, he knows there's food in there and probably WILL be back. If you can't legally shoot it, go out with a shot gun and send a few rounds in the air, if you can scare it enough with loud noise, that might deter it from coming back.

There are other ways to take care of bears with explosives but I don't want to get you in trouble, so stick with shells to make noise. Electric fence, ok you shock it and then piss it off, so it tears your flimsy fence down and goes in anyways, angry now. Unless you are going to go with 240 house mains, and make sure it KNOWS it got shocked, not sure how effective it would be.

I have a device I concocted up several years ago for getting rid of nuisance animals, I call it the 4160 Kitty Tickler. I'll leave it at that. Your game warden might be able to offer you advice or possibly even lend a trap / help you trap the bear. Once they start becoming a BIG problem in populated areas, they'll step up a lot more in helping getting rid of bear pests.

Tearing up your pen and your chickens this week, what's next week going to bring? the garage door and the neighbors dog or kid? type thing they are trying to avoid.

Good luck
Aaron

That dance you do when you pick up a board and realize too late that it's crawling with ants... 😳

Crap! We had a bear try to get the chickens last night. It tore the sandwiched hardware cloth off & got into the little 'secure' run but thankfully didn't tear the coop apart, which it easily could have. It destroyed about 4 pickets of wooden fence to get in the big run, then tore the hardware cloth to get into the little run. It was so close to getting them but it couldn't figure out the heavy metal pop door, thankfully. I'm surprised it just didn't tear the coop apart instead of all that work.

We're off to get electric fence because I'm sure it'll be back again tonight. I wish I knew ANYTHING about electric fencing! It's going to be a crash course. Thankfully DH is home today.
If I were there, I'd set it up for you. You can also put out nail boards.

Thanks all. We have decided against electric, though it is the only thing that will really keep bear away here, we do not have a set up conducive to it. I talked to DEEP & we are completely within our rights to shoot it protecting ourselves or our livestock. But, I don't want to kill it if I don't have to. I'm going to lock the birds up in crates in the shop for a couple nights in case it comes back. DEEP says they have had good success hanging rags with ammonia, bleach or vinegar around - we'll try that too. :idunno

Still not feeling well enough to do anything in the garden & I'm sad about that - it's the most perfect weather but I keep getting light headed & nauseous.

You also don't need a fence, really, just a hot wire that you can turn on and off. You can message me your set up and I can see if I can plot a wire for you.

Thank you for the offer, I will get out there & get some pics/vids soon. Our set up just seems so tricky for us because we can't wire the outside of the fence, that's in the neighbors yard. Half the coop is in an L shaped run inside a run inside a hoop - :barnie:lau
