What did you do in the garden today?

U start any seeds inside or you just gonna throw em in the ground? I've got numerous cold weather stuff going outside but unsure when to just go for moving all my seedlings out! We are still dipping in the 40s at night here.
I was a little too eager with starting seeds in that heatwave we had in February so I got big ole tomato plants everywhere that I keep moving in and out and all around lol!
I started most indoors and then moved them outdoors to a mini greenhouse. I have a couple of things that I'll just direct sow because it is a direct sow item (corn, BOSS) or because the seeds I tried to start never germinated (zucchini, watermelon, pumpkin, squash, gourds... Notice a pattern?).

Well, if there was only the ONE chicken in the pic…a few plants might have survived. But, you’re right, it wouldn’t be that pretty!
Oh, there was more than 1....I saw at least 3 before I shut it off. When it changed over to the night scene, I also noted that the coop door was left open with a light on above the door. Nothing like a highlighted welcome sign to all manner of critters looking for a free meal. 🙄

Yes, clearly they have never owned chickens.... 😂

Spent morning building more birdhouses. Have one up where a red finch has been eyeballing my porch lamp. I designed a wren house that is sideways, we'll see on that one.
And the house I put up 36 hours ago, already has house sparrows in it. Good LORD they're fast!
I have an old newspaper box on a shelf in my garage. Noticed a few weeks ago that a couple of wrens have built a nest inside it.

All done with gardening today. I got all the leeks in the ground. Yay! Also planted pak choy, lettuce, shallots and kale. It looks like 5 garlic cloves survived. I watered the beds with plants or seeds. I need to cut up the seed potatoes that I’m planting with DD on Saturday. Tomorrow and likely Friday are errand running days. The high today got to 71F. We’re also under a red flag warning due to the warm, dry and windy weather. Hoping we get rain soon.

@Wee Farmer Sarah I’m glad your garlic survived! I’ve found that every year more & more make it - I think because I’ve had this same garlic for 6 years it has adapted well to my environment. This year all mine came up with only 1 looking a little sad & only 1 split this year. I’m very happy with that.

I’m using the very last spaghetti squash from last year for dinner tonight. We’re having spaghetti squash chicken lasagna boats. Totally made it up cuz thats what I have here. 😂

Oh & I found another bag of last years green beans in the freezer! :yesss:

I bought a couple of folding tables, the kind you see at buffets. 6 feet long, about 30 inches wide, and these fold in half, so I could get them in my car. They're now in the green house, and all the pots of plants are up on them. This should help keep them warmer, now that they're off the ground.

It's also easier to water them, and get around in there in general. I have room for one more table; I might buy another one next year.

I got to taste a ripe sun sugar cherry tomato today. Its kind of sweet, but still taste like tomato. The lighter color ones were tart, so I stopped myself from picking them. Majority of my tomato plants are showing signs of stunting from the Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus. However, once they set fruit all I got to do is wait for it to ripen. Once the tips start showing stunting tell tales, the flowers fall off.

I am in the process of rotating the infected plants out with plants that have resistance to the virus. I planted three Camaro (Determinate 8 to 12 oz fruit), two Purple Zebra (Indeterminate 3 to 4 oz fruit), and one Roman Warrior (Determinate 3 to 4 oz paste tomato).

My three Princess Yum Yum cherry tomatoes with TYLCV resistance are still hanging in there and resisting the virus. They are about 6ft tall and setting fruit. I have about 10 suckers that I have rooted from this variety. I will use them to practice my grafting skills with my Pineapple and Jazz seedlings.
