What did you do in the garden today?

Tonight, and the next 4 nights will be down in the 30s. Tomorrow's high will be mid-40s, and then things improve to highs in the 50s.

I've been trying to trap a woodchuck that has a burrow too near the house. I set the trap last night... BINGO!!! I buried him in the garden and he can feed the tomato plants that will be there in a few weeks. I know that there are several in the area, so just in case I didn't get the woodchuck, I reset the trap. We have gobs of them around. I will not make any kind of dent in their numbers. I just want the one that decided to burrow too close to the house to leave... permanently.

I've been getting a lot done. I decided I deserved a reward, so I ate the rest of the vanilla ice cream that was in the freezer. I'm not a big fan of vanilla, so I drowned it in caramel sauce.

That sounds like a good reward Sally. I’ve been wanted chocolate peanut butter ice cream but haven’t found the one I like. Probably for the best anyway :hit

Hagen Daaz Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream with caramel sauce... :drool

I eat the entire (used to be) pint container in one sitting...

Which is why I don't buy it very often!
That’s the one, but I don’t add any caramel sauce. I can rarely find it because someone else always beats me to the punch!

O. M.G. My back hurts so badly from being bent over all day. For that matter, my body hurts everywhere....

I underestimated how much work putting in this irrigation system was going to take. The good news is that we got all the main lines in although I forgot to add in the shut-off valve for 4 of the lines. Oh well, I'll add them in later... I still have all the 1/4 inch dripline stretches and emitters to run off the main lines. Most of my plants are in raised beds so I have to run 1/4 polyline to each one and then add the emitter onto it.

Morning. Still fighting vertigo so my sister came over to bring me meds & collect eggs. DH comes home tonight, thankfully. I didn’t get to bring in the spider plant I was hardening off & now its bleached white. 😂 It’ll be fine.

Raining today, we need it. My lettuce isn’t doing that great. I’m not sure why it doesn’t like this raised bed on the deck. I’ve never had such a hard time with lettuce. Maybe it hates the soil. 🤔 Maybe I should add some compost. It was expensive raised bed organic soil from last summer. 😡

I have always had lettuce on poor soil. can you transplant them somewhere else?

Well something ( I’m thinking hawk now) has been picking off a chick about every other day. 😡I only saw 3 in the coop tonight when I got home from work. There is a slight chance that it could have been tucked under the feet of a hen but I’m not holding out much hope for that.
They will be a month old on the 25th. They gave up their brooder and have been roosting and going outside with the big girls. I thought about unplugging the automatic coop door and locking them inside but then I realized that they can just walk through the wire on the wire enclosed outside part of their coop. 😞
I have 21 or 22 eggs in the incubator (due May 10). I will be brooding them in a different set up. I’ve used this set up many many times over the years and have never lost more than 1 or 2 chicks, if any. I put 9 chicks in the brooder and am down to 3 ( maybe 4). 😭
On the garden front we have had lows in the 30’s ( and a freeze watch until Monday 4-24). Fortunately my garden only has cold crops at this point. Not sure how the fruit trees will fare.

31 was the forecast for overnight. Right now at the house, the thermometer reads 37. I know it can be colder in the garden, because it's down hill.

So I walked down there with my 6-second instant read thermometer (LOVE that thing!) and it said... 36.5. Good enough! The fruit blossoms are not out far enough, and that temp isn't cold enough. 3 more nights of this ridiculousness to go...
