What did you do in the garden today?

It is 1:30pm. May 1. And a feels like 39F. Actually, as I stand outside tending to the animals wearing long sleeves, long pants, insulated boots, a fleece jacket, a fleece hat, an insulated wind proof coat with hood up, while the wind is blowing along with bouts of rain, I’m going to say it feels more like 34-35F. Apparently it’s been since 1960 since it was this cold… in May.

It's upper 60s - mid 70s here but dropping into the lower 40s at night. My plants are protesting for sure.... Especially the pineapple plants I moved outside. I moved them into a little greenhouse which helps but they are starting to turn brown. 😕 I might have to bring them all back inside which is a chore.

At least the lettuce and onions are happy. 🤷

Almost forgot... I had a couple of plugs in my bedroom that I'd given up on germinating. I was surprised last night to see 2 of them were very late starters. One was over 6 inches tall but hadn't shed it's seed cap. Both were birdhouse gourd seedlings. I moved them outside this morning. Now I gotta figure out where to put them since I germinated others in the place where I was going to put them.... 🙄 Good problem to have, I guess...

I came across a video sharing 4 tomato planting secrets and one secret was throwing in one comfrey leaf in the planting hole, the others were 1 TBS fertilizer, rabbit poop soup, and spraying the plant and stem ground with a milk and water ratio of 1 to 4.

This lead me to a benefit search on comfrey and I found out it has many medical uses. There is this guy who healed his and his grand daughters eye scratch., it is also a good supplement for chickens. I will order some comfrey seeds today.

This is one of many videos on comfrey......:bow

I hope that one day I will be able to get to that thermal mass heater project I've been wanting to do for decades. I'd love to set one up in a greenhouse.

I've also wondered about heating large rocks in a fire to place in a tunnel on the coldest nights.
Has anyone done the Crisco heater for a green house? (Google that term for lots of hits and YT videos.)

DH and I are thinking of trying it... if we can find some large terra cotta pots that aren't $60(!).

I bought some fish emulsion plant food today. My starts are runty! So they got a nice meal (I hope) and will show some life soon.

I also up-potted 1 pot of spaghetti squash and 1 loofa. The spaghetti squash was 5 plants in a pot; of course the BIG stuff I planted all sprouted, so there were 4 or 5 in a pot. I had to be pretty rough getting them apart, so I only did one pot. If they all die of shock, I only lost one pot.

After reseeding empty pots that didn't sprout the first time, I only have 2 that never grew anything. I'm betting it's just a bit too chilly in there.

Hoping that the next 4 nights are warmer than they forecast. Last night was, so can they be wrong 4 more times, please? But wrong in the right direction, if you understand what I mean!

From what I've learned it's preferable to plant Bocking 4 or Bocking 14 root starts or crowns. The seeds on those plants aren't viable. If you start comfrey from seeds (common comfrey, I think it is), then it can be terribly invasive.

But it's supposed to be great food for chickens, high in protein. If they like it, that is.

I've came really close to ordering a few Bocking 14 crowns from Amazon, but I have so much other stuff to plant I decided to wait.
