What did you do in the garden today?

When I was on my way to Tractor Supply I saw a big pile of long pallets at a place that sets lumber scraps and pallets out by the road for whoever wants to take them. So I'll disassemble them and make a picket fence around the garden to stop the chickens, with a few electric strands above that for the deer.

I might be able to cut the pallets into sections and have ready-made fence panels.

Hey, @Smokerbill, I copied this post to the thread Show Me Your Pallet Projects! I'm sure others on that thread would like to see your post. I love those long pallets and you found some in really good shape. Nice find!

I am 70+ pages behind. I’m not even going to try to catch up.

I need some advice. I made this today in what was once a sandbox.

I made a little raked sand garden.

Does that look good? Any idea on how I can make it look better?

Regardless, doing this type of thing really relaxes me.

Frost warning tonight. It looks like the last one! :fl Everything is covered that needs to be, and everything else is coming inside.
I lost about 1/3 of my tomatoes and peppers last night. I was warned. I didn't think it was going to get as cold as it did.

I bought some more plants at a local farmer's market. Not the same varieties, and they're all hybrids, but oh well. I need the plants, and they have good looking ones, cheap.

It looks nice! Get some more/other sized stones, and make more designs to change it up. Most important:

DO WHAT RELAXES YOU!!

Be on the lookout for stones for your sand garden when you're out hunting/walking. We sometimes find really pretty ones and bring them home to add to the other pretty ones by our front door.

Thanks for the advice. I’m actually thinking about building a much bigger box for this. It relaxes me doing this type of thing, so I’m gonna try and make a really nice looking one. Maybe a bigger one, too.

I just gotta figure out what type of sand to use to make it look nice.

Ugh. That’s frustrating. But glad you got some more plants. Plants have been brought inside the last two nights. Will be brought in tonight too. Last cold (40s) night. I plan to plant some or all tomorrow!

Plays and would likely be the finest sand I think!

I don't know much about sand gardens, but maybe you could find some good ideas on YouTube. I think the Japanese are noted for having sand gardens. It might help to see what others do.

:lau I live on a lake. My main garden has nothing but sandy soil. I have spent years trying to turn it into black soil! If we could eat rocks, I'd be good at gardening where I live.

I'm looking forward to seeing you create these and hearing the report on how it worked.
You asked for it!

I cut off the toes from the old socks and cut them into strips lengthwise. I had a couple extra rolls of electrical tape lying around so I decided to use it to attach the strips.

I put a stake into the ground next to the stem, on the leaning side of the plant.

Then I cut off the leaves near the bottom of the plant and used a sock strip to tie the main vine to the stake.

BE CAREFUL! I accidentally cut off the main vine with my first plant. I hope it grows another.

In the photo above you can see where I dug away some of the dirt from the base of the plant. I didn't expose the roots.

Then I took another sock strip and wound it around the stalk from the ground on up, making sure to cover the stalk completely, no gaps. Then I taped it in place.

Once the wrapping was complete I pushed the dirt back around the plant so the sock covering was slightly buried.

Ta da!

As the stalks continue to grow I will trim leaves and tie the main vines to the stakes.

And I'll let you know how the experiment turns out!
