What did you do in the garden today?

Skipping 40 pages of posts. Sorry. I had to get a new phone the other day after my screen acting up for 2 days and then finally just not working at all. That put me 3 days behind. I've been trying to catch up, but it's summer time and you are all so busy with your gardening. :)

I am in the process of building our new shed. I got the area mostly cleared and leveled and got the first to concrete piles in place. I have 8 more to go and then I can start framing finally. There's a ton of lumber stacked up that I purchased yesterday waiting to be used. This new shed will be 10x16 with a 10x16 roof overage in front of it, making the total build 20x16. I'm considering forming up $400 for a 6x7 roll up door - it would be great for moving the riding mower in and out. Right now I have to get the piles done though and then the joists and floor. Should be pretty smooth after that - until I get to the roof shingles that I dread installing towards the end of the build.

In the actual garden cucumbers are crawling along slowly, melons are growing well with the heat we have had, potatoes are flowering, tomatoes are loaded with flowers and some green fruit, peach tree is loaded with fruit still growing. Eating greens still as well as some EWO, a pile of immature carrots from thinking the bed a bit late, and a small pale of peas. DD eats the peas like candy and DS eats the raw carrots as snacks. Makes me happy to see these choices over candy, chips, etc.

Turned and watered the compost. watered the trees and four oclocks.and weeded the peppers,

Then looked for where to buy an onion hoe. That would much better than standard style of hoe.

I put everything back in the shed because it might rain soonish. I was tempted to leave it out as a sacrifice to up the odds of getting rain but I don't think that works.

I ended up using the metal milk crates to hold up wood I salvaged from a piano to make shelves. That was much faster than building the permanent shelves and it is a better way to store the wood than where it was.

The last ten yard bags of maple leaves need to go somewhere besides the shed. Will they work as brown to counter the green of lawn clippings? There will be some chicken manure but not enough to handle the amount of grass.

Looking good! I love the 'school house'. Didn't you plant a butterfly garden? Is that it on the right side?

My new neighbors had a tag sale today, picked up a little cabinet. Cheap laminate, but I think I can probably paint it & use it for canning stuff. It's in good shape & sturdy & they delivered for $10.

I wouldn't paint it. I like it very much.

sitting and watching rain! I think I have never ever been happy about rain before :lau but my poor trees need watering and I am still waiting for someone to come and complete the irrigation system for them. watering by hand is mission almost impossible. there was no water near. working on that these days.

I just hope my chicks will not get wet.

They say we should get over an inch of rain today, so that’s great! We have to drive a couple hours (one way) to meet with some relatives though, during the time of heavy rain - ugh.

I’ll pull the last of the garlic scapes today and pickle those. There still might be a few scapes that show up, but we will just use those fresh.

Spouse and kid cut down an ugly pine type of tree yesterday. It was in neighbor yard, but they asked him if he would cut it down. It was very unattractive, and was a tree the previous owners planted bc kid came home with a little tiny tree in a cup over 30 years ago, so they planted it. Then, they asked current owners not to cut it down. But, I guess the neighbors got very tired of mowing over the annoying small pine cones that shot out everywhere when they got run over.

Caught a momma coon in a trap. Set the trap again…we will see if we catch another one or any young ones.

THe mulberry tree is in full fruit, much to the delight of the hens.
I swapped out the irrigation heads in the garden so now they fit into the deep drip systems. I didn't have time to adjust the heads tonight before the flies came out. Once they draw blood, they don't quit.
Tomorrow I need to add some bone meal as they are starting to set fruit.
I'll pick up some high Potassium fertilizer in town next week.
I miss mulberries, but not the mess. We lived in a house with two HUGE trees and my kids would come in purple from their little fingers to their foreheads lol.

Hopefully you get some rain! Good luck with the coons too.
