What did you do in the garden today?

Spaghetti squash! I did pick 3 of them but I haven’t cut them yet to see if they are ready or not.
Also spread out 3 more big black trash bags worth of mulch around another raised bed and of course I watered everything.

I went out to the garden this morning to uncover the squash plants I was protecting from deer. My biggest zucchini is protected with a large storage container. The others with bits of scrap pallets and fencing.

So since they couldn't reach the squash, the deer munched on a couple of pepper plants, pulling one out by the roots. And they pulled one of my two tarragon plants out of the ground too.

Tarragon is a good herb for seasoning venison, isn't it????

My thoughts on yellowjackets. You could try granular lawn insect control. I used to use Diazinon granules by pouring down the hole and blocking the entrance. By the time they removed it the colony was dead. Diazinon is no longer available. My two potted mulberry cultivars have roots to the bottom of the pot. Time to plant in the ground. Saw evidence of SVB on squash. Time to treat them.

Good hot, sticky afternoon all. It’s really only 78F but the humidity is 80%. I had a visitor at 4:20 am in the high garden.

It nibbled on the sweet 100’s tomato plant. No chance of it jumping into the garden with all the tomato cages on everything except the lima beans. I put 6 foot poles then attached bird netting to that to keep her out of the garden. I put 6 foot poles around the edges of the corn patch. I’ll attach the bird netting another day. I plan on adding poles inside the corn patch so Bambi won’t have a place to land. Heavy rain in our forecast again. We’re expected to get over an inch within the next 24 hours. I managed to get all the mowing done yesterday except for the slope. That is on hold until I can muster the energy. My butternut squash are doing very well as are the leeks, shallots and green beans.

There’s dill in there too. It’s huge.

The leeks are on the right and the shallots are on the left. The shallots are getting huge.

I don't blame her,blarq, lima beans.

Break time. All boards are cut to make the chicken wire raised bed enclosure panels. I rolled out the chicken wire on my driveway to try to make it easier to work with.

This is the first time I ever worked with chicken wire, and it's a bloody mess! Literally.

I tried cutting it into 5 foot long pieces and stapling it up yesterday. I got it done, but there has to be a better way. With it stretched out on the ground now, I'm going to build the panel frames, then slide them under the chicken wire and staple it on. After all the panels are attached to the wire, THEN I'll cut it between the panels.

Should work, except it'll be hard on my back.

Alright! Two of my raised beds are enclosed now. The first one I did has welded wire all the way around. The one I built yesterday and today uses 1 inch chicken wire. The second one was a lot faster to put up because I wasn't planning it out as I went along like the first one.

Since the deer pretty much ruined all my beans I pulled up most of them today. I'm not going to replant the vining rattlesnake beans either, because I don't want to mess with a trellis. I have both green and yellow wax bush bean seeds left over, so I'll just plant those. I think bush beans might have a shorter growing season. Maybe.

This fall, when I want those beds tilled and fertilized I can just throw some chickens in each bed and let them take care of it for me. LOL

Pepper plant the deer pulled up.

My best zucchini plant.

Dill is growing nicely.

Squash protected with plastic fencing...

The poor, wilted tarragon plant that the deer uprooted, next to another one. Hope it comes back to life.
