What did you do in the garden today?

Well crap. When I left for vacation a week ago, my garden was doing great. Came back to all kinds of problems.

1. Zucchini went kaput. Not terribly upset because DH was complaining that we still have gallons of it in the freezer.

2. Yellow squash went through a big growth spurt. This is troublesome because I'm growing it vertically up a 2x2 post so when it suddenly grew a foot, it fell over. 😕 Tried tying it up regardless but now all the leaves are upside down. Not sure how this will turn out.

3. Squash bugs have gone to town. This has caused an infestation on my spaghetti squash, pumpkins, watermelon, and cantaloupe. Lots of leaves and vines turned yellow or died.

4. Went ahead and harvested some more sweet corn. My suspicion is confirmed. Because the top of the stalks got tangled in the netting, less than half the cobs actually got fertilized. Lots of cobs with hardly any kernels. Not sure what to do with them? Maybe cut them off the cob?

5. Lots of tomatoes are ripening. Enough to make salsa. I had to throw a bunch away because of worms though. 🤬 Lots more are still green. Gotta figure out what to do about the worms.

6. Blossom end rot on my peppers.

7. Some kind of rust or blight is attacking my bean plants. Thinking of pulling out the corn stalks and planting more green beans.

8. ALL 4-5 of my cukes are dead. Not sure what killed.

9. I need to do some SERIOUS weeding. It's like everything exploded in mutant growth after I left.

10. Still have to dig up potatoes. Probably onions too... They were looking rather dead and probably only golf ball size. Maybe I should just leave them in the ground and see what happens? Will they rot?

My Farm Garden helpers today. We bagged up 4 bags of mulch ( by hand because I forgot to bring the big shovel), laid out lots of cardboard that we picked up from the post office, spread the mulch on top of the cardboard, cut lower branches off of some of the cedar trees, weed whacked, built another raised bed and watered everything. Took 3 hours. Went to McDonald’s afterwards for a late lunch and McFlurries and some time playing in the play place. ❤️

I finished getting my composting system organized - dumped all the newer compost from the old one to the new bin until I got down to the finished stuff. I put all that through a screen, which filled my last 3 raised beds, plus a big barrel. Then, wet down the new bed and covered it.
It feels so good to finally get that old bed emptied, and now everything new can go in it.

In the new beds, I planted cabbage and cauliflower, in the 3rd one I planted eggplant, which was probably not a wise idea, given how late it is. But maybe they'll at least flower before fall, and I can cover them.

Ugh! That’s frustrating!!

@TJAnonymous that stinks! I hope you can get things back under control. The squash will be fine, the leaves will right themselves (happened to me last year).

Raining here today so nothing happening in the garden. Just down the road they got over 7 inches of rain yesterday! I like rain, but that's a bit much. Made a big mess.

When the rain stops I'll be picking green beans for dinner. :yesss: I may throw a couple squash seeds in the ground & see what comes of it. I just don't want to get bugs, that bed is bug free since it was covered last year & will be again next year. I can't cover it this year but it's the only trellised bed I can manage. I'm torn, lol.
