What did you do in the garden today?

My czechoslovakian black peppers are blooming.

My kidney beans have flowers. A real pretty light pink.

So last year I had some volunteer winged squash come up and I guess it must've crossed with my summer squash cause this year the fruit is mush smoother, almost like a straight neck and instead of growing like a vine like last year it's way more compact, like a summer squash. I guess we'll see how it ripens.

Penny, I am so sorry to hear that you lost 5 out of 7 of your chicks. That is awful!
Any idea what got them? I'm glad you moved the last 2 to a super safe place.

It's been so hot here that I am having to water my garden daily. I am starting to harvest zucchini that are about 6 inches long and have been getting a couple of cherry tomatoes every day or 2. I eat them right there in the garden! I also have a few green peppers starting to get big. I am wondering when I should stop cutting the asparagus. I always say I am going to mark on the calendar when I start cutting it, so I'll know when I am suppose to stop (after 6 or 8 weeks, I think), but I never remember to write it on the calendar. I may just stop at the beginning of July. It's always the first thing I start harvesting every year.

I let the chickens out and and was picking some grass and strawberries (who a few of the begging chickens got, and then quail when I finally came in to eat the strawberries, darn those adorable food peeps! :lau) and watering the plants, a millet patch for the birds and cat (She thinks she is a goat, she headbutts and eats grass), and a Niger seed patch and some sunflowers coming along nicely which will be beautiful with their bright yellow flowers, and will attract even more bees which is good. I also gave the wild birds some wild bird seed mix and finch mix in their feeder and filled up their birdbath.
I did try growing pumpkins but uh, they died after flowering, but I am trying again with them!

I got tons of blackberries on the way as they are starting to go into the berry stage, even with the chickens eating the flowers, and I have some potatoes growing. I also have a mystery wheat patch growing on the front yard in the middle of it that I have decided to spare from mowing so I could get some nice wheat seeds when they are ready.
