What did you do in the garden today?

Good morning gardeners. We’ve been under an excessive heat warning for a while, a few weeks it seems. It was 119 here for the last two days and today is expected to be the same. The grandson is going to fry an egg in my cast iron skillet out on the street this afternoon. SMH. Sadly, my apricot tree and both plums have succumbed to the heat, the leaves are all crispy so I gave up and I’m taking them out. Don’t know if the white sage plants will make it either. Hope you’re all well!

This...

I'm happy to have two dehydrators this year. So far, I like the one without the fan better. The one with the fan has at least one big advantage - the heating coils and tray under the heating coils protected from the juice drips and small pieces that fall.

The cushaw. I removed one squash as it was growing between the fence and cloth. It's growing in an upcycled sink. I'm hoping it's confusing the svb.

The dill in the herb garden is loaded with Black swallowtail caterpillars, which makes me feel a little less guilty about the one stuck in the truck grill. There are 6 in this photo alone.

The garden is bursting. The cucumbers have gone rogue as has the wildflower patch. The horseradish is so large I can no longer walk the paths around the garden and the tomatoes are 5-7.5 feet tall as are the sunflowers, one is heading for 9.

Wildflower patch. I'm only disappointed that none of the zinnias sprouted. The pack is mostly cosmos, a couple of bach. buttons, and sunflowers. The rhubarb is positively MASSIVE and the wild strawberry under it has runners everywhere, so next year.....maybe.

It was 104 here yesterday with a heat index around 130 degrees! 🔥🔥🔥

It was so hot that your clothing would be soaked from sweat within 10 minutes if you happened to go outside.

I let all the animals out to free range so they could take cover under the dense tree canopy.

It's massively storming now so temps are falling back into the 80s for a few days.

Ugh! I know it’s bad all over right now, glad your animals are getting a break. Yay for rain!

I break into a sweat just taking ice out to the chicken pool in the afternoon. We have a chance for rain next week, but I’m not going to hold my breath.

PS, I may get rid of my chickens, the prediction for next summer is for worse than this, I can’t do that to animals. :(

Not much happening here. Just dodging some thunderstorms for now, but I'm sure they'll hit eventually.

It's my day off & I'm relaxing. I have a raspberry cream cheese coffee cake in the oven & I threw all the oldish veggies in the fridge in the food processor & gave to the chickens. Thinking about making some strawberry rhubarb jam on Sun. I may have to buy some green beans to can dillybeans this year, I'm only growing half the beans I normally do. Or I may skip them. 🥺

I watered the garden today, and noticed that there are quite a few thin little green (or yellow wax) beans forming, 3 or 4 inches long. These are on plants that the deer pruned. I was wondering if they'd come back, and they did.

The Brussels sprout and kale seed I planted in seed cells are coming up. I need to get the raised bed they're going into weeded and prepped for planting.
