What did you do in the garden today?

Heat advisory today, but only 90°, so I went outside about 5pm to check on the flock, the gardens, and top off the wildbird feeders.

I still started dripping within minutes.

I saw a small cantaloupe that had turned bright yellow. I figured it was overripe, so I took it over to the coop to cut up for the chickens.

They only got half, it was delectably ripe, sweet.

I need to figure out which variety it is. I want to plant it again.

Ooh the girls are loving life with you and that melon.

I purchased a two story rabbit hutch from Orscheln
Wow, that brand name is on my "do not buy" list now. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm going to bake, drain, and freeze the 5 spaghetti squash I got. The plants are dead, I need to clean up the raised bed (full of weeds), and see if I can get some peas to produce in what's left of the growing season.

The rain is just about here! So nothing happening in the garden today. The volunteer squash looks like a cross between a yellow summer & a zucchini. It has a couple fruit on it, I think I'll try it & see. Boy are they an ugly color though. :gig

Man, I think one of my new RSLs is broody! I've never had one go broody before. Half the reason I like them is cuz they don't go broody. 🤬

My squash (winter type) look great. 3 varieties of summer squash, and only 2 plants of one variety are dead-clearly SVB, so I imagine it will be a major collapse within a short period before too long.

I did the same yesterday-planted peas for fall. Also planted rutabaga, which will get covered with netting bc of the very annoying cabbage loopers that are constantly around. Plan to plant more peas and mustard and spinach, within the next two weeks.

It’s raining here too!! Yay! Everything needed it.

We had a high production layer go broody, and she hatched 5 of 8 eggs! We took her to the auction, with her babies bc we had planned to sell all the older high productions since we have young HP chicks, that should lay soon as they are about 15 weeks old. We kept the EE that regularly goes broody bc she’s been a good mom before.

I don't think I will grow rutabaga again because of the loopers, they stink! I had my rutabaga covered last year & they still got to them, so much so I abandoned the crop. Not worth the grossness factor to me! They were even eating the rutabaga after all the leaves were gone.

I wish we had an auction around here, I'd let my crazy EE hatch if I could & then send them ALL off to auction. I want eggs, not chicks & she barely lays - she stops for the winter, she lays 4 eggs in spring then goes broody, lays 3 eggs then goes broody again, then molts. Rinse & repeat.

Awww…she must be cute and full of personality!

I’ve used the Bt spray for caterpillars, and it works well. But remembering to mix and spray about every 7 days is my problem.

We've had gentle rain all morning. I took the tops off the strawberry barrels since I'm not running the irrigation system. Therefore I hope we don't get a hard rain which might wash out the soil. I had a Mara Des Bois strawberry this morning. It was heaven in a bite. I need to pot up some runners of this variety! So delicious...

I mentioned shutting off the irrigation system. There's clearly a leak somewhere because it's using upwards of 170 gallons each time it runs. DH is having a fit about the water bill. I have it split into 2 zones. Each zone runs an hour. I don't have that many emitters on each line. I need to run it on manual and inspect each line/emitter but it's been too darn hot. Plus I've collected just about everything so I just shut it off. At this point it would just be used for maintenance of my perennials and trees. We are getting regular rain so there's no need.

I'm kinda jealous of you guys who are still harvesting. My summer garden is done for the year. Might get another watermelon or two and maybe a few more green beans but everything else is kaput. Will start on fall garden at the end of the month.
