What did you do in the garden today?

I finally remembered to try eating the silk from the sweet corn. The tea was pretty good. The dried and sautéed garnish is in progress (in the dehydrator). I picked up sweet corn from the neighbor's stand. We don't plant corn anymore because the raccoons leave the garden alone until the corn is ripe.

It took four hours to get most grass pulled from the last strip of the tomato patch.

You ever seen corn smut on an ear of sweet corn? It's some kind of fungus/mushroom, and I've read it's really good eating. Looks nasty, but it's edible. I've never tried it but I would now that I know you can eat it.

I got a lot of cardboard ( free from the post office ) laid on top of the walking paths at the church garden and then dumped 8 bags of mulch on top. Not nearly enough mulch. Then headed over to my daughter’s and loaded up more branches and limbs. Had to stop before I got a full trailer load because tonight was the monthly bee club meeting. So I had to hurry home to get a shower before my friend picked me up to go to the meeting. Tonight’s topic was bee pests and diseases.
I also picked some tomatoes and Cheyenne peppers.

The mulch didn’t go far enough. 🤣

I’ll bring out more after I get it chipped up.

Good to know. I have chives, flat and curly parsley, marjoram, tarragon, oregano, dill, rosemary and thyme. All started from seed early this year. My dang sage seeds never sprouted, even after planting them a second time. And I know they are slow to sprout, but they were in the seed cells for well over a month.

I have lemon balm too, but I'm not sure I like it. Guess I need to learn what it's uses are.

I make lemon balm tisane. it has great health benefits.

I tried to buy mint years ago & ended up with spearmint that does not go well with cocktails - but I kept it just because the bees LOVE it! Stupid stuff ends up everywhere too, lol. Bees & butterflies should love me, all I grow just for them...& what do I get, nasty spearmint everywhere & dumb moths instead of pretty butterflies. :lau

make green tea or lemonade with a piece of fresh spearmint and you will trim it down fast. I also put some spearmint in water in summer, tastes great and I have a feeling it helps with heat in summer.

Yes, I've seen it. I had no idea it was edible. Evidently, not all of the kinds of smut on corn are edible. If I see some, I'll look up how to tell the difference and if it seems easy enough to identify, I would try it. I hope not to see much of it because it is hard on the farmers who want to produce corn.

Today I picked more tomatoes. This heat has been crazy. My front flower bed has been taken over by tree saplings so I had to trim them up. My husbands and stepson havent seen my trimmings pile yet. I think the heat ruined my elephant ear plant because they never came back after my new york trip a few weeks ago :(

A few weeks ago after searching for some local Silkies, I found a few. Got a few 8 week old babies. Tiny (biggest one and sure lookin like a boy) Miney and Eeny. (my husband named them and was Eeny, Meany and no mo. He laughed and was I already know you are lookin for more.) So we started a schedule to let the babies out each morning.
