Tomatoes are the "gateway drug" to canning. Easy, waterbath (don't need pressure canner), and lots of uses for canned tomatoes. If you know anyone who cans, offer to apprentice yourself. They will appreciate the help, and you'll learn how to do it.I want to learn how to can.

Get any version of the Ball canning book, and it'll have directions. Ask any questions you need answers to here on this thread. And don't be shy! There are NO dumb questions. We all learned at one point.
Green beans must be canned with a pressure canner. Between beans and tomatoes, you'll get about 98% of what you need to know about canning!I also have some green beans going so I want to get them canned too.
Nice. That's quite a contraption! I'm guessing you pull the lever, which spins the agitator and gets the flywheel going at the same time? And the finger pincher rollers look like you'd need a helper to use. Great!
You got it. But the mangle is a one person job.Nice. That's quite a contraption! I'm guessing you pull the lever, which spins the agitator and gets the flywheel going at the same time? And the finger pincher rollers look like you'd need a helper to use. Great!
These days that thing would be a lawsuit waiting to happen. So many ways you could get maimed. You got it. But the mangle is a one person job.
True, but not if used properly. There is a catch guard on the gears. These days that thing would be a lawsuit waiting to happen. So many ways you could get maimed.
I wish my garden looked that good but I have some small cucumbers and zucchini and yellow squash. In the green house I have cherry tomatoes (which I just ate 2) and romas, I also have some hot peppers and potatoes. It looks like another row of the beans I replanted ended up being climbing beans when I thought they were just plain old bush beans. So I chopped a section off of some cattle panel, leaned it inside the bed enclosure and wired it securely at the top.

First tomatoes starting to blush with color. Large Cherry, variety.
I pruned the indeterminate tomatoes and tie the new growth higher on the ropes, too.

Some climbing beans using the trellis. Some of the bush butternut squash look like they want to climb it too.
