What did you do in the garden today?

@karenerwin he is adorable! I love to hold little babies. 😍 It's once they start walking & talking that I run. :lau

Didn't do much in the garden, picked some split tomatoes & gave them to the chickens. We've had so much rain in the last couple days, the tomatoes are a mess. Picked a couple more mutant squash. I've abandoned the green beans at this point, I've never had so many, it's just insane. The plants are yellowing, I'll just save some for seeds & call them done.

Of course it isn’t right , but… I have a big family to feed, it takes me double or triple the time to peel small potatoes or crooked carrots, that’s why I always try to buy big straight ones 😳
I use small potatoes whole and mash em with the skins, big taters get a general peeling but if there’s skin on it then so be it; I don’t peel carrots.

I don’t like em until they’re about 30, years not months :gig

G’morning gardeners. I’ll be outside at some point today asking Mother Nature to pretty please give us rain, about an inch would be great, but more or even slightly less would be appreciated. We have about a 30% chance overnight. My little Vitex in the house has new growth so it’s doing great. The Arabian lilac in the bucket out back is doing ok, it’s supposed to be cooler now so I’m moving it out to the shade garden today for more light. I’m going to dig up one in the front yard that isn’t doing great, maybe too close to mesquite tree out there. That’s about for me, this week I’m going irking on my resume and getting the house cleaned up after the sickness. Have a great day all

I don't peel small potatoes, just let them sit in water with baking soda for about 2 hours.
What does the baking soda do?

When I'm cooking potatoes for anything but mashed, I don't peel them. I use a pair of exfoliating gloves on my hands to scrub them, and cut out any questionable spots on the skin.

Personally I think there's a fine line between what food should be regulated/inspected and what is overreach. A staggering amount of perfectly good food gets thrown away because it's too small, too big, or fails to meet some other arbitrary or questionable "standard."

My DH inspects food in schools, stores, gas stations, etc. He has PLENTY of stories that will gross you out and make you never want to eat out or shop at a grocery store again.

On the other hand, the government throwing out tons of food, meat, eggs, milk, etc because it was grown by the Amish who refuse to vaccinate their animals or follow other contrary guidelines is also wrong. Human beings lived thousands of years just fine before the USDA and FDA was established. Yes, I am aware of people who have died from food borne illness. There's something called tort law though which holds those people accountable if/when it makes sense. Throwing out food by the thousands of tons every day based upon rigid "rules" simply doesn't.
