What did you do in the garden today?

Nothing in the garden today but did attend this sweetheart’s baptism in the morning and then watched him and his older brother this evening ❤️
He is 19 days old

So I decided on a whim to start digging up iris bulbs/rhizomes. The previous homeowner had planted them everywhere years ago. I haven't collected all of them yet but I've already filled the bucket plus some. I'll combine these with the ones from my mom's house. No friggin idea where I'm going to replant them yet! I may have asked this before but does anyone recognize this plant. It gets these really long leaves that are layered. I have seen it flower (last year) but don't remember what it looked like. I don't think it was very impressive though. I THINK it's some kind of iris or bulb plant, at least. There are about a dozen of them around the house. I will probably dig them up too but haven't decided what to do with them yet.

Oh, and does anyone remember that my DH "accidentally" cut down my blue tree hibiscus? One of you swore that it would grow back from the root ball... Well, it did! 😊

That plant in the 3rd picture looks like a bulb flower one I have. It started producing a flower and the first time it looked like a Lily. This year the flowers looked like naked ladies.

So I didn't do anything in the garden. I fed my girls this evening. Instead of dealing with the garden and the girls I just went fishing with my son and youngest granddaughter and 2nd youngest grandson. My granddaughter caught a fish and my grandson caught 4. Now grandma has 5 trout in the freezer. Definitely gonna have fish and squash fries tomorrow night for dinner.

what do you say about wasting thousands of tones of fruits and veggies because they are small or big to meet standard?
Of course it isn’t right , but… I have a big family to feed, it takes me double or triple the time to peel small potatoes or crooked carrots, that’s why I always try to buy big straight ones 😳

Have you considered not peeling them?
It is faster to scrub them instead and the skins and layers just below the skins have a higher percentage of nutrients than the interior.

:idunno It does not bother me if people pick the best food for presentation at a contest. The less than perfect food can still be eaten by humans as normal. Or, if the food is even of lesser quality, that can be feed to the animals or ultimately composted. Just because only the best food is set aside for a contest doesn't mean that good food needs to be wasted.

I was not talking about contest. a friend of mine got for free a truck worth of pears for her farm. they were dumped by a road as they were not accepted to be sold due to the "wrong" size. as the fuel cost is high they just dump fruits and veggies anywhere.

I don't peel small potatoes, just let them sit in water with baking soda for about 2 hours. then I wash them and scrub with a brush. tiny and crooked carrots are for my bunnies. problem solved.

That would be a waste of food. Good that someone was able to get a load of pears for free.

I have never seen dumping of fruits and veggies where I live. However, many years ago, I saw on TV that farmers were killing their cattle and dumping them in a mass grave because the cost to keep the animals alive was more than the farmers could hope to sell them for at market. Again, seems like a waste of food, but the economics of the situation was the farmer saved money by killing and burying his cattle.

:idunno When it comes to farming, I don't pretend to understand all the nuiances of the market. When I was growing up as a kid in a small farming community, we had farmers that were paid NOT to plant crops. Somehow that made sense to somebody.
