What did you do in the garden today?

It's done and up. (forgive my shadow on the bottom right of it)
I'll probably pull the last three tomato plants tomorrow. They aren't doing anything.

And then I somehow lost my balance as I was mowing and fell on my tailbone. The ground wasn't as soft as I could wish, and I'm a bit uncomfortable right now.
Falling isn't contagious, is it? I managed to fall in my kitchen Tuesday after running tomatoes through the Victorio strainer. Backwards. I couldn't get up at first and of course my phone was up on the kitchen table! Messed up my hips and back, but I did get the juice canned. Already have problems with my hips and back. I've been trying not to do too much, but I was using the strainer again this morning. Finished my pizza sauce today.

Harvested a second 5 gallon bucket of prickly pear cactus pads today, then threw them all into new places to grow. Miraculous plant

  • No watering required
  • Natural defenses
  • Any portion of a pad can grow an entire new cactus easily
  • Entire plant is edible
  • Lots of delicious fruit
It's the ultimate permaculture plant for southern regions of the US. Opuntia strica does great in Florida. The fruit tastes like raspberries
I think we have some prickly pear in our pasture but it stays really small... Less than 6 - 8" tall....but spreads laterally. And I have never seen it bloom or fruit. It's kind of a nuisance because the horses won't eat the grass around it.

That's probably an Eastern Prickly Pear (opuntia humifusa) or something similar. They grow in the pine forest around here and they're generally just small, and unimpressive with lots of thorns

Down here within 100 miles of the coast we have the Coastal Prickly Pear (O. stricta) and it's a very fruitful plant. I harvested most of mine from a patch around the size of a football field

Here's an example one from google

There's even bigger and better species than this out there but I can't get them to grow in Florida with our rain. Mexicans are very lucky to get these huge cactus trees that are loaded with fruit

As a RN, one of the standard questions we ask people is if they had any recent falls. Falling is a major health concern as it might indicate a number of concerns.

:old Lots of women of a certain age say they fell down and broke their hip. In reality, many of them had a hip that broke and then they fell down. If you fell down and have hip and back pain, I would encourage you to see a doctor, if you can. But I might be overly cautious as a trained RN who has had to care for a number of patients with broken hips. Do what you can to stay out of the bed and/or wheelchair. Hope you recover quickly.

So you're saying the hip spontaneously fractured and gave way?

That is very scary.

My PT told me that 1 in 3(? Can remember, but it was a lot) women past menopause will break either their back, hip, or wrist. Of those choices... I'm glad I got the easy one, the wrist. He made it sound like you'd only do one, so I'm in the clear, right....? (Um... no.)
