What did you do in the garden today?

I picked all my turnips this morning and got all the greens into the freezer. The turnip roots weren't worth trying to clean up enough to eat - too much insect damage.

So, I decided to try replanting all the turnip roots in hopes of getting another nice crop of turnip greens. Maybe doing this will be better than trying to plant seeds to get more greens before it freezes outside.

I loosened the ground and mixed in some chicken compost before I replanted the roots. I made sure that the cut off tops of the roots were above ground, thinking sunlight would encourage them to grow faster. Fun little experiment! Hope it works.

If it doesn't, that's ok because I have 18 red Russian kale plants that are doing well since I set out the plants last month. Those should provide plenty of greens.
Turnips may survive your winter and produce seed next year. They do not survive my zone 5 winters. Shogoin variety will survive my winters but I do not like its root. A white Japanese type that makes a big ugly root.

I messed up this year and forgot to plant kale. Well, actually, I planted lots of stuff and ran out of raised bed space. I should have snuck some kale in somewhere because I sure missed it this year.

Update on my large banana baby; I cut the flower end off my large banana baby when it started rubbing against the support pipe. Then, I notice another large banana baby that has already caught up to the first one. This one ended up with a huge, mutated flower with 4 heads. It's the first time in my life seeing something like this, I decided to cut it off. It mutated after I threw some 10-20-20 fertilizer to support the fruiting.

Having children can be hard on a woman's body later in life. I think young women having children should be thinking about their bone health later in life and taking measures to ensure they have better bone health then our mothers and grandmothers. Maybe they do these days.

My mother fell down and broke her hip. She never got out of the wheelchair for the rest of her life. That was too sad. Absolutely, don't take your mobility for granted.
Dang those hips, as women, we are 3 times as likely as men to break them 😬

My mom's mom fell and broke her hip. She spent the rest of her life in bed in a nursing home. When she passed, my mom wrote me and said not to feel sorry for her, if she'd had her way, she would have gone 10 years ago when she broke her hip. Grandma's nickname in her youth had been "Evie-go" as in, "Let's go shopping!" or "Let's go work in the garden!"

She also had Parkinson's, which limited her mobility (and perhaps led to the fall), which was another cruel, cruel twist of fate on a wonderful, beautiful woman.

RIP, grandma. You are a lot of my gardening inspiration.

How did you break your back?
It all started with a car accident years ago & just kept getting worse & worse, then one day I bent over to pick up the chickens food bowl & pop. DH had to come get me, I couldn't move. That's why I never go out without my phone, lol.

Another beautiful day but the rain is coming.

I wish I liked swiss chard or kale, seems easier to grow than spinach. But ick. I'm gonna get this spinach figured out if it kills me. :old

Yes. My spinach has failed (usually) or barely limped along (once or twice).

Or figure out how to prepare chard or kale so that we like it. There probably is a way.

One way that does not work is to eat it in the garden as it is picked. I did that yesterday and a spider bit my tongue. I think it was a spider, I squished it as soon as I spit it out so didn't get a good look. It was tiny and bright red like the ruby swiss chard stems and I've seen spiders like that in other parts of the garden. It hurt for quite a while. :(

I tried sauteing chard with garlic and butter. Not bad but it mostly gets fed to the chooks. I feel bad for you folks with broken backs. I come from a family of them. I once had a herniated disc on top of my arthritis in my lumbar spine and that was sheer agony. Sciatica reminded me of an eternal leg cramp that followed you into your sleep.

I didn't do much in the garden today because I was busy repairing and reinforcing a quail brooder for some new quail arrivals but I did happen to find some nice wildflowers on my journey.

Oh my, that’s a heck of thing! I don’t blame you for taking your phone everywhere, I think as we age it’s a good idea. Now if Igor would just answer his…
