What did you do in the garden today?

What is a luffa?
Luffa is a vine that grows long green “cucumber looking” fruit. When the fruit dries out you peel off the brown skin, shake out the black seeds and then you can use the luffa for a luffa. 🤣 sponge/scrubby for shower or dishes.
Sponge that grows on a plant instead of in the ocean. The vine has yellow flowers My bees loved them.

Made a pumpkin pie from some of the small pie pumpkins I grew this year.

@Sally PB, got all the EWO bulbs planted in one of my 2X4 foot elevated sub-irrigated planters. Nights are getting down into the low 30's, so I wanted to beat the freeze. Planted them about 2-3 inches deep. Do I need an extra cover over them for the winter?

:fl Don't know how they will survive the winter snows, etc... but next spring I'll see how many grow. Anyways, all the bulbs are in the ground. Looking forward to some fresh onion greens next spring. Thanks.

Getting pretty cold at night. Had a freeze warning a couple nights ago, but did not freeze. I picked everything remaining on the tomato, eggplant, bitter melon, peppers, etc... that I could find.

Dear Wife said some of the food was not good for us to eat, so she cut up that stuff and I'll feed it to the chickens. They will like it. If not, it will just get composted out in the chicken run. It's so nice having composting chickens. Even the scraps of food that they don't eat get turned into the compost litter, so nothing gets wasted.

Luffas need a long (loooong) season. I got one that was turning from dark green to lighter green to yellow green. I picked it, though I wish it could have grown for another month. If they get frosted, they are ruined. I know it wasn't done, because the seeds inside weren't black yet, ie, ripe.

I didn't notice ANY bees on my plants. I did see lots of ants. I think ants pollinated them.

I'll get a picture of it. It's wimpy. But I grew a luffa! :wee

Cover them with some leaves/straw. Something to help insulate the ground a bit. They can handle the cold and freeze. The mulch helps with frost heaving. You and I both know about frost heaving!

I "fluff up" the mulch when the greens start poking through. The mulch will trap the warmth from the ground.

I pull the leaves/straw/whatever away when we're past a hard freeze. I got caught by our late freeze on May 26th. The green onions wilted, some were ruined. But they grew back just fine.

Good morning all. @Sueby haven’t seen you recently, how’re things? We made big progress yesterday as hubs was feeling well enough to go out and get some more work done. From this point I am on my own for the most part, at least until we build the beds and put up wire. I have to go get some stakes and the new gate today when I run my errands and hopefully I’ll remember paint. I’m headed out to put wood frames around three trees and fill with some blocks and soil before errands. Have a great day all!
