What did you do in the garden today?

Last night I put in a seed order with Baker Creek.

I purchased borage and Summer squash seeds from them earlier this year, after the company was recommended here. I was very happy with the results so I decided to get some Winter/Spring seeds now.

I ordered two types of lettuce, Chadwick's Rodan and Henderson's Black Seeded Simpson, a variety of Rutabaga, and asked to be added on a waiting list for a yellow turnip.

Spring seeds I ordered:
  • Crane melon (cantaloupe)
  • Ozark Pink tomato (natural resistance)
I went overboard, ordered FOUR types of Summer squash!
  • Zucchini Gray
  • Zucchini Fordhook
  • Early Prolific Straightneck
  • Zapallito Del Tronco
And Vulgare oregano!

The turnip tops are about 8" tall.

ETA: I meant to note that the seeds I have purchased in local stores have terrible germination rates, even though they're "name brand" and marked as fresh for 2023.

My kind hearted daughter-in-law dug up a nest of baby moles. No bigger than my pinkie finger 😳
She didn’t want to kill them. I told her that she couldn’t bring them home. 🤣
I don’t want them in my garden or yard.
She put them in a pile of dirt and put a big dirt clod over them lightly to give them shade.

We were digging up a huge pear tree that has never produced any fruit in 8 years. I’m going to replace it with a clone of the tree that produces lots of pears.
It is so dry that we didn’t get very far today. We filled the most with water twice in the hopes that it will make it easier to dig out tomorrow.
Also harvested the last 3 pie pumpkins. 2 of them had a lot of squash /stink bugs on them so they were starting to get soft. I have them in the oven to see if there is enough flesh to make a pie.
There deer have eaten all the lettuce, beet tops, carrot tops and even pulled up some of the carrots 🥕
I guess they need to eat too. 🤷‍♀️

I have decided to season a quart of homemade tomato sauce for spaghetti tonight. I have homemade Italian seasoning and put in 1/4 cup. Still not sure it is enough spice. Any advice on how much spice per quart?
Store bought Italian season makes my tomato sauce taste tangy. I only use a teaspoon for 2 cups of tomato sauce.

Nice order of seeds!

Baker creek is great but I really like the seed packaging/instruction of Botanical Interests. They seem to be readily available in many (more local) stores. It tells me all the planting instructions in the back and none of the other seed companies do nearly as good.
