What did you do in the garden today?

I'm not sure I've ever even tried one. When we first moved here we picked up a couple & tried to get into them & gave up, lol.

First round of Dahlia picking:

Beautiful! I discovered my Dahlias don't last more than a couple days though, after they are cut. My zinnias are still fresh and beautiful though...

Yea, not a super long time. It depends on how old they are when I pick them too. I try to pick ones that aren't quite all the way open, they seem to last longer.
Roasting pumpkin seeds tonight. Also experimenting with some roasted peanuts in the shell before I do the main haul.

Need to go spray my lemon tree for mites and scale. 😕
I just got 2 pumpkins for the chickens, I hate to tell them, but I'm pulling the seeds first for meeee! :lau I love roasting pumpkin seeds, it's my Halloween night tradition.

I roast the seeds from butternut squash too. Actually, I put them on some foil on top of the wood stove and toast them that way.

I never thought to try roasting the ones from my spaghetti squash! They always go to the girls. I may have to rethink that. & unfortunately my pellet stove doesn't get hot. I always wished it would so I could put a pot of water on it for some humidity in the winter.

I picked the last of the peppers. I'm amazed that they hadn't been killed by frost yet. The stuff in the downhill garden was toast last week.

I got the garlic and multiplier onions planted a few days ago. Today I put some chicken poop/straw mulch on them, and then topped that with grass clippings. We're going to get some rain in the next couple of days to water them in. We'd had a good soaker just before I planted them too.

Now garden work is clean up and mulch. And stuff that spring Sally will be glad fall Sally did.

Location matters. That's why I try always to mention that I live in northern Minnesota, and your results in the south or in the desert may be completely different.

I only have 10 chickens, but my deep bedding works great for me. Just the opposite of what you have experienced. My deep bedding is basically odor free, provided I keep adding fresh layers of litter as needed. Over the winter, I will have as much as 10 inches of deep bedding in the coop by springtime. But my chickens live in the coop during the winter snow months.
Living in the deep south, deep litter doesn't do well here. The litter collects flies and smell too much. I use sand because it is a desiccant. It absorbs moisture from the poop and therefore, no smell and no flies. I have close to 80 chickens and no smell! Plus the sandy poop I get from cleaning the coop does wonders in the compost for our red clay soil in the garden. Win-win.
I'm in the South and so far deep litter is working great! Maybe it's because I built a hoop coop and the structure is so open?

Hear hear! We carved pumpkins with the kiddos. I gave the chickens all the guts but WE get all the seeds. After Halloween I try to get the extras from the store for cheap too... Just for the seeds. 😉

I've heard you can do it with any winter squash, really...
