When I did mine a couple years ago I did the same, logs & woodchips, then uncooked compost, then a mix of soil & compost from my local garden shop. It's worked fantastic. The level has dropped an inch or 2 but works well as it leaves me room to add more compost. I have that issue with regular beds - I run out of room to add compost. I do no till so I don't like to disturb them.
Exactly! I like to see the soil dropping that 1-2 inches every year because it shows me that the wood and organics underneath is decomposing. I just top of the bed with fresh chicken run compost and ready for the new season. I am pretty much no till too, except when I first set up the raised bed and want that top soil and chicken coop compost mixed together really well. After that, it's just adding fresh compost every year.
