What did you do in the garden today?

Hey does anyone want a couple packets of kale seeds? Not my thing, they came with my Greenstalks. I'd be happy to put them in the mail to someone who'll use them.

It was nice to go out in the cold & pick dinner. The frost cover is working really well. I should be calling it a freeze cover tho. :lau

I do if it's still available.

My best tasting tomato for 2023 was Purple Zebra, I got the seeds from Park seeds, but it was kind of expensive something like $10 for 10 seeds and I had to pay shipping. I just found out who else sells them and some places are way cheaper like https://victoryseeds.com/products/tomato-purple-zebra-f1.

If the tomato seeds you want to buy are AAS winners, its best to check this site for where to buy and shop around.

Last year, I ordered from Victory Seeds for the first time. I was very happy with everything.

I picked them because they were among the few offering Sioux tomatoes. I ordered several other things since I was making an order.

Since the zip code finder isn't working on the new maps, I opened the link that allows you to look at your state map individually. According to that map, I moved from Zone 7b to Zone 8a.

Color me skeptical. This is saying that winter lows are ON AVERAGE slightly warmer which is why the zoning changed. I respectfully disagree and base my perspective on local data which was gathered for a lawsuit against the local electric company and their smart meter scam. It's actually been colder, not warmer.... So I'm going to stick with my old designation.
It's best to trust more in your experience and of those around you than in pronouncements from some anonymous pencil pushing bean counting unelected bureaucrat sitting in an air conditioned office thousands of miles away.

I wonder if the Old Farmer's Almanac is still decent?

I think their zip code tool is not working for anyone at the moment regardless of where you live.
I haven't had a problem with it at all. I just searched my zip...

For those of you with hugelkultur beds, what do you use for your greens? It’s not the right time of year to trim my bushes, and no garden waste this year. Will chicken coop litter work? I haven’t wet it down to compost because it was so hot over the summer, so there’s a lot of poop in it.
When I built my first Hugelkulture bed we'd already done our burn. I didn't have logs, so I used some branches, dry canna lily leaves and stalks, anything I could find. I had some leaves, too, but the top layer was a mixture of partially rotted compost from yard waste AND the dirt I found under the composted leaves. Oh, and some peat moss.

After harvest I "double dug" in organic matter.

The second and third beds were done in a similar manner earlier this year:

I don't think there's any "proper" way to do Hugelkulture, just consider the basics and use what you have.
