What did you do in the garden today?

Thanks for the reminder. I bought fresh cranberries today, but didn't think about making relish. I'm going to go buy an orange and a lime right now so I can make relish too!

Think I'll buy a sweet potato and make some sweet potato custard for tomorrow too. I don't feel like messing with making a pie crust so I'll just make the filling. LOL
The ready-made pie crusts can be pretty good. I used to use Pillsbury, but they got smaller and smaller until they no longer are big enough to cover an 8" pie. I discovered that Aldi's has their own brand of the crusts, and they taste very good. I take them out of the refrigerator to warm up for about 30 minutes, then unroll and use.

our cheapest turkeys were 1.98 a pound. And that's with us being with in a stone throw of major turkey processing plants. The number of trucks on the road full of live gobblers September and October was NUTS.
The cheapest I saw here was $.99/lb. I use the bones for broth so very little will be wasted.

Today I did laundry, some house organizing and cleaning, nothing major, no guests this year. Then I made homemade mincemeat (I don't like stuff in a jar) and browned the sausage for the stuffing. Tomorrow I will bake the pies, make cranberry sauce, then stuff the bird. We have an electric turkey roaster which is a wonderful invention. It sits quietly in the corner of the kitchen, cooking the turkey, while the oven and stove are occupied with other food being prepared.

Oh my gosh gang, we were gifted with our first egg today! I don’t know why I makes me a little bit teary. Bless these girls. No wonder Zooey was cranky, she was probably feeling all of those uncomfortable physics feelings of moving an equivalent watermelon out of a small space. Bless this girl!

Only four of us for Thanksgiving this year. That will be very, very strange.

Also, we are welcoming a new fiancée this year - as of last Friday night. She is Congolese so I'm going to attempt hot sauce. The owner of the African market sold me the peppers and gave a recipe and instructions. He is from Cameroon so hopefully it will taste right.

One package Carolina Reaper Peppers
One package Ghost peppers
One package Scotch Bonnet peppers
All with stems removed but not seeds or insides.
One onion, quartered
2 bell peppers, stem and seeds removed
1/2 of the bag of white pepper
Ginger root, scrubbed but not peeled

Put all in a pot with 3 cups water
Cook until it looks dead
Blend it in a blender with a tablespoon or two of olive oil
Cook it (crock pot with a fairly tight fitting lid is best) until all the water is gone (so it will keep)
Put it in the blender again with just enough olive oil to get it smooth

Do not add vinegar
Do not add garlic

If it turns out, I will try to grow Carolina Reapers, Ghost peppers, and Scotch Bonnets next year.

She volunteered to make chicken at Christmastime and was delighted when I said I think I can find an old rooster for her. I'm pretty certain I can find an old hen, less sure I can find a rooster.

This is true too.

In my case, I'm inclined to think it's mostly due to the change in the grains. Probably a mix of both, though.

We're going to be paying for this, likely for decades. We're paying for it already, but it will keep snowballing. As I have said several times, I'm glad I'm not 30.
I’ve read an article about how they changed the wheat breeds ( they used to have longer stems) for easier harvesting and how they dumped stuff as fertilizer on it, which also did not improve it, many people who are sensitive to gluten are ok with older wheat breeds. Another thing is celiacs disease, that is a totally different case. My youngest son had many food sensitivity issues as a young child, thank God he grew out of almost all of them. But that’s why I had to cook/bake gluten free for a year ( also no egg, dairy or soy products. That when I really learned to cook/bake 😅)
