What did you do in the garden today?

Loving these tips and taking notes, thank you!!

I'm only planning to start a small portion of my seeds (which is a sub-selection of everything else that will be direct-sown as usual) so if the onions fail indoors, NBD. I wonder if varietal makes a difference -- these are bunching onions not bulb, so maybe that's not as risky?

Marigolds -- yes, adding those to my starter plan. I have a couple seed packets so like with the rest, I'll do some as starters and direct-sow the others to stagger a bit. Definitely saves $$ from buying them later on.

The tin foil idea... I have a couple of old space blankets tucked away somewhere, so I think I'll use one to take advantage of this! My greenhouse cover is clear, so maybe I can bungee the blanket on the outside. Must find ways to keep kitten from getting too nosy :)
What kind of Marigold are you growing?

Well, darkness is closing in and the snow has started to fly. By morning we'll have 8-12 inches of snow, but winds will be pushing it around so much, there's no way to measure it. Drifts will be massive.
The noodlenecks are locked inside with deep, deep straw to lay on, their coats are on, and they have an extra stall to sit in and complain about being locked in. They also have heated water and a radio.
The hens have to extra bales of pine shavings to stand on. All their windows are shut, and they have heated water as well and wide perches. It's currently 7'F and it's 22 in the run, and that's without sunshine. If we can get rid of the clouds with these intense cold days at least they'll be toasty and well fed the rest of the time.

Now we wait.
Windchills will be -45-52'F and normal temps Won't break above 0F until next Wednesday.
Lows will be down to -20F

According to Burpee, it's "Marigold, Happy Days Mixed Colors" which doesn't tell me all that much other than it's a fairly generic varietal. Non-edible though.
I grew some kind of marigold seed mix last season and saved a bunch of seeds last fall. There were two or three different colors of flowers. I need to test some of the seeds I saved to find out if they'll germinate. I saved a lot of zinnia seeds too.

From your previous posts it sounds like you're well prepared for the storm. Do you have a generator for when the power goes out? I have a couple of little Honda 2000 watt generators for backup power that work out well for me.

We aren't without power for more than 13 hours. We have big one, but have never used it. Too much bother.
