What did you do in the garden today?

my pretty little sugar fairy christmas cactus is done flowering, so I'm going to take some starts to give away to friends. Otherwise, all's quiet on the gardening front.

These days I look forlornly at the bare trees and snowy landscape, and dream of hot hazy and humid summer weather. Only 172 days until July 1st. Gosh hope I have enough hay for the horses till then 😳

It’s a snowy day today the chooks are barn bound now, and have taken to digging through the horses’ straw bedding, and even made nests in the straw pile where they lay gorgeous eggs 😊 they too are dreaming of days when they can dig up my gardens for me, and steal my tomatoes and Petunias.

So beautiful! I have one but the flowers are fascia coloured and it blooms twice a year - I always wondered if that was normal?

Even with lots of straw, they shiver when it’s below the middle teens at night. And since the days are cold too, we figure we should bring them in during the night.
I am keeping my one silkie in my heated feedroom/office - she decided to finally moult last month. It’s has been incredibly mild here but that’s about to change come tonight.

Oh how I am dreaming of sun and warmth and soft warm earth growing things - even weeds and burrs would need nice 😊

Has been stuck in my head all day long...
Song by Christina Rossetti and Gustav Holst

In the bleak midwinter
Frosty wind made moan
Earth stood hard as iron
Water like a stone
Snow had fallen
Snow on snow on snow
In the bleak midwinter
Long, long ago
Angels and Arc Angels
May have traveled there
Cherubim and Seraphim
Thronged the air
But only his Mother
In her maiden bliss
Worshiped the beloved
With a kiss
What can I give him?
Poor as I am
If I were a shepherd
I would give a lamb
If I were a wise man
I would do my part
But what I can I give him
Give him my heart
Give him my heart

Today, I picked an over ripe round eggplant to use as a topping, for my pizza. I took the skin off and put slices of it in a salt brine to prevent it from turning brown. There were a lot of hard seeds between the slices, so I decided to puree it in my blender. I mixed some eggs in and made a round omelet. I put the round omelet directly on my pizza dough and covered it with sauce and the rest of the toppings.

Normally, I can eat half of a regular made pizza, but today I could only eat 2 pieces with the eggplant. This was the first time doing this, so I learned some things.

Next time, I will fry the eggplant puree and get rid of the excess water I had to use to blend the eggplant and I won't add any eggs to make an omelet. In addition, I will only put a spoonful of the fried eggplant around the pizza, so that each piece will get a spoonful.

The interesting part of pureeing the over ripe eggplant was I did not taste or notice any seeds and it taste like eggplant, so its not limited to pizza.

To get rid of the eggplant water, skin it, cube it, salt it, and put it in a strainer over a bowl. The water will drip out of the eggplant.

That pizza looks great!

I have one of those, I think...! I'll have to find it for my green house, see if it can do anything to help.
I do a lot of backpacking and to sleep in the woods, ya use a sleeping pad. Its insulation is measured in 'R' value. These pads are pricey but are made of a material that rolls like a sleeping bag, is super lightweight and will offer much insulation. The 'r' value changes based
on the weather the hiker will want insulation from. Higher the R value, the higher the cost and the better the insulation. The brand is thermarest, but there are cheaper ones. I have thought about cutting a piece to whichever size I need for under a nest or bed or whatever. Before i got one of those pads, i would use a piece of material called tyvek. Tyvek is a very thin material used in construction and it offers some insulation between the ground and body. 🤷‍♀️ Just thoughts, good luck everyone 🐓❤️
