What did you do in the garden today?

Weatherman said 1-3” snow.

We got around to 7-8” 🙄.

Had to drive 70 miles, some on the highway, some on curved and hilly roads, and I left about 2 hours after the snow started in my area. Luckily, as I drove south and west, the snow wasn’t as bad. I couldn’t leave the event I was attending until 5 hours later, while it snowed the entire time I was there. It took me 2x as long to get home, detoured around one wreck on the hilly road by going down an even more remote and narrow road …but, made it home ok. It helped that it was Friday night of a holiday weekend. The roads were all noted as yellow to red to deep red while I was at the event, but the interstate was ok by the time I reached it. Whew! At least the snow is pretty in the sunlight this morning!

When I lived in France, you just went to the Pharmacist, and they would prescribe medication for you to keep you healthy.

I’ve heard that there has been talk of a 3rd tier of meds…one where pharmacist can prescribe to you. This already happens to a limited extent in some states for a few meds (birth control pill is one, perhaps). But, there are many tried and true meds that could be dispensed directly by pharmacist. Not sure if this idea has expanded anymore, but it would be great if so.
Ok, I will mention the "what if the SHTF" possibility too.
Yup, I figure I’d be able to grow it. But if SHTF happens, could I keep it? It would be ruined, stolen, etc. but, I’ll keep growing stuff and hopefully SHTF doesn’t happen!

Looking forward to the warm weather this week -about 2-3 days of warm temps (for Feb) but nights still cold. So the fruit trees will get another dose of dormant oil/copper mix to ensure I get all nooks and crannies as they will start to wake up before too long.

The weather was supposed to warm up to 60°, so after lunch I headed outside to do some yardwork.

I decided to double-dig the bed next to the one in which I planted peas last week.

Look at how the soil level has dropped ⬇️⬇️⬇️

I started digging, and found some Hugelkulture wood not quite decomposed, from a year ago.

What do I mean by double-dig?

Dig a trench:

Fill with leaves:

Dig a second trench, use the dirt removed from the second trench to cover the leaves in the first trench, add leaves to the second trench...repeat:

Notice the soil level now. ⬆️⬆️⬆️

Then I gathered sticks from the front yard. Our sycamore tree drops a lot of small branches, so there were plenty.

Then I added the sticks to the two remaining raised beds as part of the Hugelkulture process. I climbed in on top and walked over the sticks to break them down and make it level.

Then I started adding leaves, partly-rotted, from my compost piles.

At this point I knew I'd better stop, before I crippled myself for the rest of the weekend...my body is not as forgiving as it was 20 years ago.

My mom's favorite...

If anyone is interested I created a post about how I have been adding these raised bed gardens to my yard: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/hügelkultur-raised-beds.1604433/post-27499245

Glad you got back okay!

That depends on how thick the S is. If it doesn't coat everything too thickly, you probably could keep enough of it to be much better off.

More so if enough other people are encouraged/helped to garden too.

Winter returned! 10 degrees when I got up this morning. Report on the homemade mouse bait. Myth busted. Still nave mice.
I was 11 this morning. Had half inch of snow yesterday. There's some canine tracks outside of the poultry yard...either dog, exsmall coyote or exlarge fox.

What I read on baking soda and corn meal, said 2 weeks.
