What did you do in the garden today?

I changed my avatar to last years sunflower photo. To remind me of one of the best garden seasons we had. Actually any season could be considered better compared to this years washout.
Also to remind me to plant more Sunflowers next year!
They are so beautiful!!!:love
BTW! Look at the blue sky! I forgot what blue skies look like!! Hehe

Squash.

I knew things were going too well with my 25 chicks. No losses, everyone doing great, no illnesses. When I got up at 4am I checked on them and everything was fine. At 7:30 am - Turned on their lights, fresh feed/water - everyone happy. Go in at 11:00am, got one girl with blood all around her tail. Looks like everyone pecked the heck out of her tail feathers. Looked even closer and I see a total of five looked to have varying degrees of tail pecking. Pulled those 5 out into a jumbo dog crate to wait while I wrap chicken wire around the dog run with zip ties. Chunked them into the run, metal roof panels on top for now. Set them up with food, water, dog crate, roosts.

Obviously I'm going to have to do day trips outdoors until the coop is finished. Once it's done I can put the run in it's permanent position with skirt in place. Meantime I guess they'll be at slightly increased risk, but all I can do is what I can do. Crap.

So sorry to hear that! My girls are just starting to lay, and I am thrilled to have 100 percent survival / thriving for these past 5 months.

I remember being thankful when they were big enough and it got warm enough to let them free range - it made them happy / content / less prone to pecking order issues.

Any chance you could let the uninjured ones free range until the run is done?

send me one please :celebrate

If you're in northern kentucky i'll happily share patty pans and cushaws - today I had my hubby grating up as many as he could into 2 cup portions to freeze for zucchini bread. There is still a PILE of them in the cold room, tho!

But maybe you meant you wanted a condemned area sign, lol.

Gardening might not actually be any cheaper than a therapist, but it's got to be cheaper than a therapist, a gym membership, a tanning salon, and a trip to the farmers market added together.
Boy, isn't that the truth? Gardening is so healthy, both physically & mentally, I think.
You've got to love typos - chow-cow. I didn't even know it was a mistake - lol. Sounds like something we might like, but I've never had it before. Maybe I'll find a recipe for it and make it sometime! Is it good for sandwiches?

Chow chow is really good for sandwiches : ) and you can make it spicy with hot peppers too.

In TN there was a pumpkin field where when they harvested they left a lot out there. We used to fill up the truck and cart them home for the animals. I only eat the seeds, but i chop the pumpkins up for the goats and the chickens love the guts, that slimy stringy stuff. Pumpkin is a natural dewormer. Planted my pumpkin seeds in peat pots. Hope they do ok.
That's great when you can get free food for the animals. I bet pumpkins are really healthy for your goats & chickens, with all the vitamins and nutrients, as well the the deworming benefits!

Picking cherry and heirloom tomatoes for farmer's market tomorrow. Pulling off 50 pounds a day, with 5 - 10 lbs not so pretty - those will go into sauce or salsa.

Also need to grab patty pans, yellow zucchini, white cushaw, purple and rattlesnake beans, peppers, watermelon, and cukes.

Sooooo hot and humid. Thank goodness we irrigated! Hasn't rained in over a week!
I got tired just reading all the work you did today! lol. Do you have greenhouses for all those veggies, or do you plant it all in the ground? So you sell at the farmer's market? That's exciting!
