What did you do in the garden today?

Picking cherry and heirloom tomatoes for farmer's market tomorrow. Pulling off 50 pounds a day, with 5 - 10 lbs not so pretty - those will go into sauce or salsa.

Also need to grab patty pans, yellow zucchini, white cushaw, purple and rattlesnake beans, peppers, watermelon, and cukes.

Sooooo hot and humid. Thank goodness we irrigated! Hasn't rained in over a week!

Just came in from pulling weeds, leaves and sticks where the bunnies are going to be. 200 gallons less on the ground. Cleaned up around the burn pile then came in to cool off. Husband wanted me to help move shelves. I get out there and we move one set and he runs off to tell our helpers what to do. I wait , i pick up sticks. I get hot all over again. Get back into house to chill.

Squash.

I knew things were going too well with my 25 chicks. No losses, everyone doing great, no illnesses. When I got up at 4am I checked on them and everything was fine. At 7:30 am - Turned on their lights, fresh feed/water - everyone happy. Go in at 11:00am, got one girl with blood all around her tail. Looks like everyone pecked the heck out of her tail feathers. Looked even closer and I see a total of five looked to have varying degrees of tail pecking. Pulled those 5 out into a jumbo dog crate to wait while I wrap chicken wire around the dog run with zip ties. Chunked them into the run, metal roof panels on top for now. Set them up with food, water, dog crate, roosts.

Obviously I'm going to have to do day trips outdoors until the coop is finished. Once it's done I can put the run in it's permanent position with skirt in place. Meantime I guess they'll be at slightly increased risk, but all I can do is what I can do. Crap.

Are they not getting enough to eat?

A patty pan is a very cute tender summer squash with a mild flavor. You can use it much like zucchini, but it's slightly firmer fruit makes for good grilling, and even stuffing/baking. I use it shredded as a sweet or savory pancake, and I also use it in my zucchini bread. This year I planted a sunny yellow, a pale green, and a dark green so they'd make a nice presentation at the market.

And a cushaw has a crooked neck - looks like a pale green gourd that gets more pale, almost white when ripe. Just another (very large tho) summer squash.
