What did you do in the garden today?

Last year I bought some comfrey seeds online. Can't remember where I got them... Etsy, maybe? Anyway, I've tried several times now to get them to germinate and not a single one is viable. Just purchased another packet from (hopefully) a different provider.

Edited to add - apparently I bought the first batch of comfrey seeds from Southern Seed Exchange on 5/3/23.

I only planted one half of the raised bed, will plant the other half in a couple weeks, for succession planting.

I replanted one lettuce type that never sprouted, areas of carrots that also didn't germinate. Then I transplanted the German Johnson tomatoes where the Pink Ozark hadn't sprouted. And added marigolds!

Fell asleep in the recliner when I took a break this afternoon. DH thought he'd surprise me and do something nice by tilling the garden while I was asleep. Well, I know he meant well but there was a LOT of weeds in that patch of dirt... Weeds that have now been chopped up and basically reburied in the dirt. I wish he would have awakened me before he started... I would have pulled most of the weeds BEFORE he tilled which would have left a cleaner bed behind.

Oh well, nothing I can do about it now.

I'd love to see a picture (or more) of this process! I've never heard of anyone doing it, and it interests me greatly! Is the first piece of towel under the soil at the bottom of the container or on top? Do you take the towel pieces off when they germinate?

as I usually run late I always save time by doing that.

I put soil first (about 2/3 of the container. on top of that soil I put a piece of kitchen towel and wet it so that seeds stay where I put them. then I put another piece of towel over seeds and wet a bit. at the end I cover that towel/seeds/towel sandwich with some soil. then I gently pour water so that all sits in water.

towel breaks so it stays where it is. it also helps to keep humidity.

Hello, did you water soak your seeds in the refrigerator for 24 hours before planting them in the seed tray?

I had heard comfrey was aggressive. I bought roots of a blocking variety, doesn't set seeds. Put it in confined space so it doesn't get away.

I found a patch and dug up some roots for my starts. I don't think my original patch has spread by seeds, or I'd see it in a lot of other places.

Do you want me to send you a root cutting? PM me your address.

Do you mean a paper towel, when you say a kitchen towel? That's what I'm envisioning.

My new patches are getting bigger, but I wanted that. It's in a spot that gets mowed on two sides, so it can't do much in those directions.

Good morning gardeners. Not raining. Yay! Yesterday was spritzing rain showers on and off. The wind was strong enough to blow stuff around so I’ll be picking up that stuff today. I also hope to get something accomplished outside today. The plan for the day is to get some tilling done. The long term forecast shows a chance of frost next weekend so I think planting peas and potatoes would be safe. I picked up a tray of lettuce starts and pansy’s yesterday on my way home from TSC. No sign of asparagus coming up yet. Hopefully something will stir soon.
