What did you do in the garden today?

I am just trying to get a balance between not enough garden and too much garden. In TN i had such a big garden and so much livestock i could not get the whole garden planted, let alone keep it weeded. I will have more beds next year. Maybe you need some raised beds too.

When I was a child it was everyone's job to weed, but the garden was close to 2 acres of land.. we have 3/4 of an acre here the area we picked for garden was not perfect and with our physical problems keeping even what the birds have now was awful for us much went to waste.. going to tire gardening was the only way to have any but possibly one raised bed could be done

No gardening done yet today, but i think the daisies are getting too much water from the looks of them. I got all of the cedar slabs off the truck, just about 1/4 of the load left which i am piling somewhere else. Had to stop for a break, it was raining again any way. So much for 20 per cent chance of rain, second shower so far today. Picked up two mule loads of sticks and branches and small rotten logs to put down the palates to stack wood on. The dogs were thrilled to get outside and my shepherd played fetch and later went into shredder mode. Who me? Shred sticks? 20170729_132142.jpg

I could root them and plant them... But where would they go!? I spent the whole year digging tomatoes out from around my corn, squash, onions, peppers and melons. I gave away 30 tomato plants this year at LEAST. I still have another couple DOZEN in with my legumes and brassicas. I have nowhere to put the rest of these! I could have a tomato EMPIRE.... If only I had good soil and the space to put them in!
Have you considered a greenhouse? Hubs put up two greenhouses probably 4-5 years ago, and we grow tomatoes & peppers exclusively in the bigger one. We put one plant in each 2-3 gallon pot (pots are filled with rich MN dirt, plus manure, and a little pro mix). He lines them up so close the pots are almost touching, but stakes them as they get big so they aren't infringing on each others space. We have roughly 170 tomato plants and 80 asst. pepper plants (asst. colored bells & habeneros) growing. They are doing great! They seem to love the heat, as long as they're kept well-watered, and they produce very well. If it would be possible, you might give it a try. Works really well for us.

We spent the morning planting our pumpkins & winter squashes out into the garden. It was quite a chore getting them separated from each other, because on the porch, their tendrils grew around each other's leaves and up the porch screens. They were actually bigger than I thought - some close to 4' long. Hubs dug holes, I added aged manure (from our neighbor's cows), and we put them all in one big bed. Watered well. They've been flowering for a few weeks on the porch, but have only seen male flowers thus far. I'm sure the female flowers will be coming soon. They were looking a little wilted when we came in for lunch, so not sure how they're going to hold up. Will probably get some soaker hoses set up around them so we can keep them watered well, and hope for the best! I'm already tired and it's not even 2:30 yet!:th

Cap, I know those feels. My husky tried to gnaw her way through a piece of split oak firewood last month trying to get at a rat hiding in the wood pile. She got half way through before I noticed and moved the wood for her! Half way through! Goodness. Good thing our dogs don't turn those teeth on us, huh? :p

Chick, I feel pretty confident that, being in the heart of white picket fence suburbia with postage-stamp lawns and only 1/4 acre for my whole lot (one of the biggest in my neighborhood) that greenhouses are likely impossible. :p
Someday I would like to have greenhouses, though! I really want a walipini to grow cold-weather crops in year-round. We've been considering moving out to a larger property recently so maybe someday.
For now, however, I will stick with expanding my veggie garden each year. In the fall I'm going to try to add another 20' onto it with sheet mulching and compost and a cover crop and see how it goes.

There are small greenhouses that are ok for suburbia, not much bigger than a shed. I'm working on hubs for one.
