What did you do in the garden today?

@itsasmallfarm , @Wee Farmer Sarah , I'm curious as to how your sugar beets are doing. I always thought it would be fun to grow some.
For some reason the bed I planted all the stuff in is apparently cursed. The leeks are struggling to hang and even though the seeds sprouted they just didn’t survive. I was thinking about trying to re seed.

I removed all the mulch and compost from my largest raised bed in preparation for planting. It's the one that has herbs, onions, garlic, chives, a couple tomato plants and a clump of crocosmia growing around the sides.

I'm going to fill the middle of the bed with zinnias and marigolds to make a big pollinator patch. I have around 25 each of the marigold and zinnia starts which should be more than enough. I'll also plant some marigolds around the other veggies to repel pests.

Gotta pick more red leaf lettuce and kale today. They're both still growing like crazy.

Speaking of too late...the hail did a number on my entire garden. 😥 Little seedlings that I nutured & grew up indoors months ago...what a sad end. I have 3 tomato plants that survived & the corn is trying to rise again. I think a pumpkin plant is hanging on. I don't understand how squash & cucumbers can just get pulverized like that...was it that much hail? I guess so. It knocked over that end of the garden stakes & deer netting, too. Maybe we had a mini-nado, it was all twisted like a big swirl blew it in a circle. The wind & hail Pummeled my wildflowers, too, all still blooming but laying down now, all flat on the ground.

Here it is mid June, but it is as hot as the end of July! 🥵 This is not typical, heat like this so darn soon. Oh, we get our share of 100+ degree days, but usually not til end of Jul & August. While June may not be too late to plant some things, with this heat...wow, I don't think it's a good idea. I dont want to sprout some seeds for nothing, only to have them get fried. Any advice?

That's why my flock also enjoy safety of the predator proof pens, because if a predator got them in the night, I'd be devastated. I've never had a raccoon attack but I've heard the sad stories...they kill every bird & leave behind a bloodbath. I do not want raccoons, foxes, snakes, stray dogs or rodents in with the chickens. With predator proof pens I can leave their coop chicken doors & windows open for air flow all summer. Think about some pens, they're not hard to build & worth peace of mind. My flock can free range when I am there with them & I have chased off many hawks, a raccoon & young male fox. Avoid potential disaster whenever you can.

I wish my chicken coop walls looked that clean.... 😂

An allergist recommended Flonase to me. Talk about gag & puke, snort, gag & spit then puke again reflex, oh that stuff is nasty, as Any nasal spray is. I cannot do the sprays at all. I can barely do the saline drip a few drops at a time stuff, but at least that is not a horrid taste lasting for hours. Sinuses are just a PITA aren't they?!
Flonase is the only antihistamine that does anything for me when my allergies strike. Claritin, Allegra, Zyrtec, all are worthless.

Ok! Whew. It’s normal chicken behavior 😂. We forgot to close the door one night and they were not on perch but huddled in corner and on top of each other!!! Crazy birds. I know they were afraid then.
Told dh that I wouldn’t be surprised if the first chicken we lose is because they smothered one!
