What did you do in the garden today?

This year was the first time I haven't planted any sweet potatoes, and I'm glad I didn't. It would have been so frustrating to see them wilting away in the drought we have here.
The potato plants died in early July - usually they last a month longer and most of the tubers are just grape size.
I'm glad I don't have to live off my potato patch or I would starve in winter...
These 2 were volunteer plants that I really thought would not produce anything. Sorry to hear about the "drought ". That has to be frustrating trying to raise anything.

I know your pain. My index finger and thumb is finally recovering from being callused, cracking and being stained with garden soil. My fingers were finally splitting and hurting so I've been using chapstick on the cracks. It's really been helping.

Though I'm starting to twist wires again at work so it'll be back to cracking and dirty soon enough. Can't wear gloves and work with 18awg and ferrules... It would take forever.

In other news, I went to my first PTA meeting. I am not good at talking to other moms. I made a fool of myself a little bit, I'm not surprised but it still hurts a little bit. 🤣🥴

Harvested tomatoes this evening. Going to chop more plants down tomorrow. Time to get ready for more cucumbers and lettuce!

It has been in the high 90s, Thursday it's supposed to cool down to the mid 70s, through the weekend. 🤔 The weather is trying to trick me into planting too early.
I used Corn Huskers Lotion when I worked in manufacturing. It really helped my cracked and sore hands. I don't know if it is available anymore?

You don’t provide supplementary water?

And when they go broody they smash the eggs
Not all...my big Brahma Mama Delaware Mix Chanel is a real big girl, she is wonderful & so gentle. Never broke an egg yet. She sits on other hens' eggs, too, protecting them til I collect them. Even broody, she's never gotten grumpy or pecked at me. I just Love her. ❤️ Such a good mama, too.

Try this combination, it does really well on the wrinkles and black dirt on my 73 year old hands.

My hand scrub brush, actually not even for hands, got one in the shower & 2 by sinks. The real hand brushes weren't tough enough. I need to apply Neosporin or Burts Bees hand salve & wear cotton gloves to bed again. That routine works good to heal. Yes, & use the gloves! 17242532706612551526930998574570.jpg

I never fried with rice flour before, I want to taste this fried chicken..............
I made some the other day; the texture and flavor of the crust and chicken is kind of addicting. I can see why she thinks it's the best, but it's a matter of preference in my opinion. It's similar to the boneless mochiko chicken nuggets that are sold at local restaurants in Hawaii, but it has its own distinct Thai flavor and texture.
  • 1 ½ lb bone-in, skin-on chicken, (see note 1)
  • 5 cloves garlic
  • 8 cilantro stems, chopped
  • ¾ teaspoon white peppercorns, or black
  • 2 ½ teaspoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoon Thai soy sauce, (see note 2)
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 cup rice flour
  • Oil for frying, (see note 3)
  • Fried shallots, store bought or recipe below (see note 4)
  • Sticky rice, for serving (optional)
  • Sweet chili sauce, for dipping (optional, see note 5)
This is what my A1 copilot told me:
No, sugar does not break down cooking oil while frying. However, sugar can influence the frying process in other ways. When sugar is present, it can caramelize and contribute to the browning and flavor of the food through the Maillard reaction, which occurs between amino acids and reducing sugars at high temperatures1.

If you’re noticing issues with your frying oil, such as foaming or degradation, it’s more likely due to factors like overheating, contamination, or the type of oil used23. Maintaining the right temperature and using the appropriate oil for frying can help ensure better results.
