What did you do in the garden today?

If I get brave tomorrow, I'll show you my garden. Last week I pulled up the logs that delineate the borders so I could dig all the mess up and do weed battle again.

Maybe you should talk to my garlic.

It's 3rd generation, usually I plant it in the fall but we were having issues this past fall, so it's still hanging up in the kitchen, and yes, it's sprouting - I want it to sprout. I just want it to be in the ground when it does!

Technically though, what do you call the green shoot that comes out of the bulb?
people say it sprouts. but that always bugs me

spouting is when a seed germinates. garlic is a bulb and does not sprout! it does make shoots though! ;]

and i plant mine in the fall

We just bought a house within the last month, so in the garden today I planted 4 things of romaine lettuce and a raspberry plant. Our soil is pretty awful (parts are like clay and there are rocks in the ground). I'm off to pick up a hoe to "till" the soil. We also have rabbits, quail, and ducks and the city offers free compost so my soil will be a work in progress.
Keep at it and given time the soil will improve. We had sand brought in to back fill against the foundation--lots of bags of peat and added everything we could think of. Hand hoing my be more effective than the tiller if the soil is that packed. Maybe build raised beds??

I was under the impression the bread seed was the somniferum variety. That's why my brother-in-law can't have poppy seed bagels - he runs an airplane shop at the airport.

You are correct. Any poppy seed products you buy are somniferium seeds. Homemade ones are whatever you choose.

Test your soil? Test how?

Most garden centers carry a multi meter to test N K P and PH. It is easier than the old style kits plus not too expensive. That stands for nitrogen , phosphorus and potash and PH is how acid or alkaline your soil is.
